A bitter irony is that small companies with few resources can profitably work on products and features that cater to an audience of less than a billion people, but large companies with almost limitless resources somehow find that such products and features are suddenly “not worth it”, even products and features that the very same company used to work on when it was smaller.
It’s a lie. Large companies become corrupted by unmitigated profit maximization, willfully discarding all previous values.
Add ChatGpT to your product, label ChatGPT as "myAI" and your product looks and works exactly same as 100,000 other things.
It makes my head spin to watch that lemming race to the bottom. Everyone is doing the same thing and no one thinks about what can be done against this insane downlevelling. No one thinks at all. Who suggested that suicidal tactic to you? ChatGPT? Microsoft?
"Any child who learnt by doing, any person aware of the fact that understanding requires much more than passive observation, any student trained in a lab or in a field, any engineer who ever designed an artefact, any scientist who ever ran an experiment or devised a simulation ... must have perceived, at some point, that our ever richer insights into the nature of reality have their foundation in our practical and creative interactions with it." –Luciano Floridi, The Logic of Information
October is #BatAppreciationMonth! Here they are being fully appreciated in plate 67 from Ernst Haeckel’s dazzling Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms of Nature), published in 1904. More about the image, including details of the line-up, here: https://buff.ly/3eqmohs
Enshittification isn’t things that were not shit becoming shit; they were always shit, you just didn’t feel it.
Surveillance capitalism isn’t some horrible corruption of capitalism, it’s just capitalism in the age of the ubiquitous digital network.
The problem isn’t things that were good becoming bad. The problem is things that have always been bad finally negatively affecting even those with bucketloads of privilege who are now attempting to explain away why they were ok with it all before.
Don Knuth on ChatGPT:
"How does one train an AI to make up such convincing lies?"
"not a single novelist has realized that…a singularity would m…be preceded by a world in which machines are 0.01% intelligent
(say), and…millions of real people would be able to interact with them freely at essentially no cost."
"I myself shall certainly continue to leave such research to others, and to devote my time to developing concepts that are authentic and trustworthy. And I hope you do the same."
Here are some questions you can ask yourself for every #GAAD announcement you encounter today. https://ericwbailey.website/published/global-accessibility-anger-day/
1. No contaban los recontagios; si una persona daba positivo en dos incidentes separados, la contaban como un solo caso;

Right-to-left language localization question:
Should timelines in a video editing application run from right to left for languages with right-to-left writing systems?
An old version of the Apple HIG says they shouldn’t, but I’m not convinced. I’m looking for expert (and native speaker) opinions and trustworthy references. Thanks!
