🚨 It is not only civil rights organisations that are concerned about Meta's switch to "Pay or Okay".
👉 The EU Commission has sent the company a request for information under the Digital Services Act to see if it is complying with its obligations.

War and the media. It works like this: sentences in the passive form are without an agent complement. Palestinians are being bombed, yes, but it is not said by whom.

AIEd #1: Academic AI researchers looking to optimize educational outcomes through engineering solutions - even field insiders now worry about their social and ethical responsibility https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40593-023-00346-1
AIEd #2: Education policy officials see AI as a route to cost saving and efficiency gains. If the policy problem is teacher shortages and morale, the fix must be technical - not structural, political or economic
https://schoolsweek.co.uk/chatgpt-keegan-launches-call-for-evidence-on-ai-in-schools/
AIEd #3: AI in education is serious business. Edtech, big tech and their investors are relying on it after the post-Covid markey slump. Edtech must have AI integrations to get investment - and therefore to get into schools/unis https://www.holoniq.com/notes/artificial-intelligence-in-education-2023-survey-insights
AIEd #4: AI in education is an object of sociological analysis. It interweaves with bureaucratic processes of institutions and policies - it's a part of power networks affecting education institutions and individuals https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40593-023-00342-5
And AIEd #5: Pragmatists who are just trying to cope, who feel like they're "in some sort of lab experimenting with our kids" and are "grappling with how to stay on top of constantly evolving generative AI tools" https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/oct/31/educators-teachers-ai-learning-classrooms-misuse
Maybe AIEd #6 is emerging - educators fed up with tech-determinist, corp-led, entrepreneurial, consultancy-driven, ministry-approved visions of AI in education as cost-saving automated technical solutions to structural educational problems 🤞 [end]
È veramente vergognoso che il governo #Meloni voglia cancellare una conquista di trasparenza della società civile che permette di scoprire le #BancheArmate

@albertcardona @brembs @deevybee If you don't trust the judgement of researchers and replace it with numbers, you get exactly what you want: a lot of numbers. Goodhart's Law made it easier to predict this from the start. And yes, you cannot replace the living craftsmanship of scientific communities, with all their pride and prejudices, with numbers.

"ChatGPT can't teach writing".
But OpenAI will try anyway to get the money we are now spending on education.
So, teachers, "your boss can be suckered into firing you and replacing you with a bot that fails at doing your job" (@pluralistic)

So according to these very (very!) rough estimates, just cancer research and psychology alone add more than a million unreliable articles to the literature every five years or so.
If the scholarly literature really were a sinking boat, fighting papermills would be like trying to empty the boat with a thimble, or plug the smallest hole with a cork.
When wil we finally get ourselves a new boat?

The academic journal publishing system sure feels all too often a bit like a sinking boat. We have many leaks, e.g.:
- a reproducibility leak
- an affordability leak
- a functionality leak
- a data leak
- a code leak
- an interoperability leak
- a discoverability leak
- a peer-review leak
- a long-term preservation leak
- a link rot leak
- an evaluation/assessment leak
- a data visualization leak
etc.
