media re:election

A few weeks ago, the New York Times’ front page predicted the Democrats defeat writing: “voters are prepared to punish Biden.” It wasn’t an opinion piece, they stated it as a fact. This is the kind of “news “ I’m sick & tired of. They were not only wrong, but helped create a defeatist attitude that besieged the news pre-election. #media #election #democrats #nyt #fail

RT @JamesFallows
It never ends:

- Sunday show questions for newly elected gov of PA, and re-elected gov of MI, on (a) will they run for prez in 2024? and (b) do they support Biden in 2024.

This is a TOTAL waste of time.

Just don't.

It costs corps like @LillyPad@twitter.com ~$70 to produce a year’s supply of insulin. Yet the avg annual price of insulin went from $2,864 in 2012 to $5,705 in 2016 to $12K in 2022😳

A 17,142% markup isn’t inflation & it isn’t supply chain issues—it is 100% corporate greed.

US elections, voter suppression, demographics

This is why I, and so many other Black voters, are so often right about who is going to win a US election, and your favorite statistician, or election pundit, is so often wrong.

Your polls don't matter. Campaign promises don't matter. It's all about turnout. And turnout is all about voter suppression. And voter suppression is all about racism.

Without understanding US racism, your election predictions will always be woefully wrong.

Let’s be clear that CWs are great. But someone existing as different from you, as a marginalized identity, does not go behind a content warning. And talking about the discrimination they experience might make you uncomfortable—trust me, when I experience racism, it’s very uncomfortable. The response is to try and do something about it, not to tell them they’re making you uncomfortable.

"You mean that pigeon?"

"Well, technically it’s a creole, but it’s still impressive."

Because true freedom is a woman and her doctor making the health care decisions she needs.

True freedom means being able to spend time with your newborn child instead of being rushed back to work days later. It means being able to love the person you love without fear of discrimination.

True freedom means graduating college and being able to pursue a career of your choice without the burden of debt.

You'll notice that in US society, Black people experience more repercussions for speaking about racism, than racists get for being racist:

* Kaepernick, fired and unhire-able
* Jemele Hill, fired
* Black employees at Coinbase, let go/asked to leave
* Inmates at Rikers who complained, email and letters taken away

So the "Hide your distasteful Black experiences" message gets mixed up in the "Use subjects" message, in a way that makes people understandably upset.

I’m struggling to remember a more consequential week in tech across so many different storylines. Entirely possible I’m forgetting some. But the Twitter implosion (and repercussions) and the FTX insolvency (and follow-on crypto market instability) feel monumental. Just me?

Personally I have experienced a situation in where someone give certain signals about self harm and even worse here on Mastodon a while ago.

I dropped everything and started talking♥️ Ofc offer professional help first(with phone number or anything) but try to talk!

I’m not a psychologist, not by angling shot but I am human🥰

Please, if you see something like this happening take the time and talk with the person! You never know what difference it can make!

Talking about “Racism Light” a Mastodon

This audio is ABOUT experiencing racism here from white liberals,

especially those who don’t know the evolving definition of racism includes the system that keeps it in place.

Which does not exist for Black people.

So whatever race you are

save your “racist to white people” argument.

Shove “just use a Black instance” arguments.

The point is WE SHOULDNT NEED TO.

Audio follows in about 5 minutes.

I’m begging the men here to resist the impulse that tells them women need federation or other technical details of open source disproportionally explained to them.

Turns out a lot of women know an awful lot about tech.

My only humble suggestion is that it needs more #tardigrades aka "water bears."

Tardigrades have survived every mass #extinction on Earth since they evolved about a 1/2 billion years ago. There are ~1,300 known species. And millions of years from now, they won’t even notice we’re gone.
