As somebody who's avoided COVID-19 for three years it's kind of depressing to think how easy it would have been for the government to get to COVID zero.

N95s for everyone and mask mandates. An actual vaccination campaign. Strict air quality rules, and a handful of targeted capacity limits where needed.

We would be fine. We'd have a society. Our hospitals would be functional. People wouldn't be dead.

It would be cheaper.

There are many legitimate reasons to track Elon Musk's flight coordinates, for example to offer him ads more relevant to his interests

Ayesha: Huh? Why only Pakistani food?

Me: So it can be a Naan Profit.😅

The internet has unlimited community-building potential.

Tech has enormous community-building potential.

The problem isn't tech, it's tech bros who want to own and control our communities.

They want us there & paying, but they don't actually want us to build or leverage power.

The reaction to a senseless death like that of Stephen “tWitch” Boss illuminates a gulf: between people who absolutely can’t understand it, and people who can. The former are the ones who tend to say that suicide is cruel or selfish or indefensible. That’s very wrong, but you can understand how they can’t make the cognitive leap if they’ve never experienced real depression. The latter are more likely to be thankful they got through the worst times.

@elonjet Heh. And as someone point out, while the ElonJet at Twitter was banned, the BezosJets account (run by the same guy) was allowed to remain. It's almost as if Elon's content moderation is perhaps less than principled.

Here's the #inflation story you're expected to believe (advance warning: this story is entirely false): America gave the poors too much money during the lockdown and now the #economy is awash in #FreeMoney, which made those poors so rich that now they're refusing to work, which means the economy isn't making anything anymore. With all that extra money and all those missing workers, prices are skyrocketing.

NYT Did Musk a Political Favor

This piece reinforces the feeling among the paper’s left-wing critics that the New York Times is hopelessly devoted to protecting the 1%.

Black people will literally bring receipts and screenshots of #racism on this app and people will reply like “wait, what’s soo bad about that? I have the same predisposition to comments or questions like these, does it make me racist?”

YES. If you reply to a concern about racism by centering yourself instead of listening to the person affected, and trying to learn, yes.

In the past 24 hours, Ukrainians have been been blocked from signing up for Twitter using their phone numbers and using 2FA and accounts tracking Russian oligarchs' jets have been suspended.

What happens on Twitter can seem like a sideshow, but Elon Musk's actions are a direct threat to democracy.

I'm old enough to remember when Yahoo! Groups unceremoniously nuked every single LGBT mailing list overnight, leaving people completely untethered from communities they had relied on and loved. When that happened, we got angry at Yahoo!. And yet when people flee from Twitter, anger is directed at those "defectors". Twitter is not a country, and we were not its citizens. It is a corporation. If Twitter is driving people away, it's Twitter's fault. It's not our job to fix it. #noxp
