Back when I was working on the board of the CBLDF I got very used to the idea of material for adults being challenged by people who thought comics were for children. The idea of books aimed at children being challenged just because they had positive black characters was unimaginable. The world's changed.

@neilhimself Is "New Kid" actually banned or removed from school libraries/curriculum anywhere? Katy, TX decided not to ban it, ultimately, if I'm not mistaken?

@ech @neilhimself The article says, “According to the PEN America organization, a nonprofit that defends free expression for authors, “New Kid” has also been challenged in at least two other Texas school districts, as well as districts in Florida and Pennsylvania.”

Yes, eventually it was not banned in Katy, TX but now the book is on lists that busybodies who have never read the book will use to challenge books.
