With a transit strike happening starting today, a bunch of local forums have essentially the same discussion:

A: I'm too poor to Uber and I'm not going to be able to get to work
B: Just walk
C: I'm not going to walk 2/3/4 hours
B: what's the problem? Just walk
C: I'm disabled and/or have a family or other commitments and can't spend 2/3/4 hours commuting each way
D: So? Solidarity

People seem to have a hard time understanding that not everyone is an able-bodied person with infinite free time.

BTW, 4 hours isn't even close to an upper bound on walking time. I looked up two big suburbs people commute in from that have (had) transit and the Google Maps walking estimates are 10 and 16 hours, respectively.

I'm not saying that people shouldn't strike (and I think most people in tech underrate unions), but telling people to "just deal with it" when they're inconvenienced by a transit strike is only going to turn people against the cause.

@danluu I noticed this during the early days of covid, too; various "progressive" commenters would respond to bans on e.g. gardeners by saying "just stay home and take care of yourself" as if not getting any income for months was gonna be a peaceful restorative time for someone.
