@anneapplebaum Is it the "pro Russian" caucus or is it the "don't want to be the world's policemen" caucus? I mean why isn't Europe handling this – they easily could? (It's shocking that *we* have to coax them into commandeering the $300B!)
@ech @anneapplebaum if they’re anti war money for Ukraine but pro war money for Israel or Taiwan they definitely don’t have qualms about world policing
@ech @anneapplebaum Uh.. Almost all of Europe is in NATO... How do you suppose Europe handles this 'on its own' without drawing in the US?
@ech @anneapplebaum Europe doesn’t have the infrastructure to produce munitions and weapons at the needed pace, not anywhere close. And the political will to build that isn’t there as EU believes they can continue to lean on USA. From a capability / wealth point of view it could be built, but it will take years of US pressure to get there. Meanwhile Poland is arming up like mad but again mostly hardware and not enough ammo production or integration.
@arno_in_sing @anneapplebaum They could do more, but don't see the need, because they have a policeman already. Even if you don't think they have the means: If they had the will, even, there'd be at least that 300b. They don't even do that. Appeasement.
Yeah, I think Poland gets it: better to support Ukraine now than place all existential hope in article 5. Money they send to Ukraine now is pennies on the dollar. The rest of Europe, not so much.
@ech @anneapplebaum If they were the " doesn't to be the worlds policeman" caucus why are they using the same rhetoric as the Russians? They are definitely the pro Russian caucus.
