When they won a badly framed referendum, which they did by using misinformation and lying, they believed it gave them license to impose whatever they wanted on the substantial part of the country that did not want it. It never occurred to them that they should discuss, listen, and compromise in order to win broad based support. The opposite in fact.

4. Now the blame for this fiasco lies squarely with the leadership and members of the Tory Party who supported Brexit. They forgot the basics of democracy; it is not the dictatorship of the executive, but government by consent of the citizens. It makes life much more complicated. But they wanted simplicity; in everything.

5. They do not believe in complexity. In their view, international negotiation is like buying a second hand car; you screw your “opponent” to get the best deal. Simple. But reality is entirely different. And, as they found out, if you use this approach in international relations, instead of looking for the positives where both sides gain, you may get screwed yourself.

@simonpease - its childish and stupid. Remainers are really just people who supported the status quo, i.e., we recommended not scuttling the ship you were on cause you would drown. Tories are now annoyed cause everyone else has a dinghy except them.
