Fix the News published 38 editions of their newsletter this year, "featuring 1,932 stories from 170 countries, and what we found was that while the headlines kept insisting on collapse, the data - child mortality rates, vaccination coverage, emissions intensity, deforestation curves - kept showing stubborn progress." https://fixthenews.com/?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

Yay, the first of my regular column essays for Strange Horizons is out! I worked super hard on this one, a history of the symbiosis & mutual influence between western genre fiction & Japanese anime/manga. Designed for non-anime-fans interested in learning how the fandoms nourished each other. W/ bonus WWII history & sparkly musicals! http://strangehorizons.com/non-fiction/a-mitfreude-of-anime-and-mangas-relationship-with-anglophone-science-fiction-or-this-essay-will-not-try-to-get-you-into-anime-and-manga/
Actually Open AI (the parent company) is a non profit, with the mission to prevent the scenario you (rightly!) fear. At least the development is open source and transparent. Just imagine a for profit was sitting on this code......

Scifider abolished their system where you could buy a certain number of "points", so you could "scale" your investment to your needs. Now it's all or nothing. So, if you are just looking for commercial sources of chemicals, I recommend to be kind to your blood pressure and not even look at their commercial rates :-)
For freely available online textbooks on a variety of courses, LibreTexts is a great resource, especially to begin exploring a subject.
They're mostly accessible to non-specialists and have many advanced features: https://libretexts.org/advanced.html

I'm a chemistry professor at UC Irvine that specializes in inorganic chem and electrochem.
My research focuses on #electrification of the chemical industry, #decarbonization, #carboncapture, and #sustainability. Current projects on electrochemical carbon capture and utilization, but also electric fields in #catalysis and #bioinsipred systems.
I'm an #academicmom that loves cooking, running, cycling, hiking, ultimate frisbee, and ice hockey but never has enough time.

Trying to link this long hoped for news from Eric Berger to the #Astrodon tag.
Welcome!
Looking for recommendations- books for a teenager with an aversion to love stories
@Rachel
also and age appropriate: The Earthsea Books by Ursula K. LeGuin, especially the early ones (there is one love story in a later book)
also: The King's Peace and the King's Name by Jo Walton @Bluejo The hero there is #asexual. Not to confuse with the prequel "The price in the game", which is definitely a (very good) love story.
I also very much join in @Fanua 's recommendation of "A Wrinkle in Time"
@adrian @RollingSohn
Danke!

(the literary heir to the great Ursula K. LeGuin)
Paper day! We wrote a paper on the JWST backgrounds, how they compare to predictions, and implications for science performance. https://arxiv.org/abs/2211.09890
Discerning astrophysicists like their deep fields like chocolate and coffee – as dark as possible. So, how dark is the JWST sky?

I wonder whether any of the #Firefox developers are aware how I feel every time they push the "Restart to Keep Using Firefox" message in my face while in the middle of working?! I want to support browser diversity but it's difficult to continue using a product that shows so little respect for their users.
I can understand if this were for a serious 0-day vulnerability or something but this is for every single update!

Hi #ChemiVerse
I might come to regret this, but I've seen some journalists compiling lists of people on here & I thought it might be useful in the early days here to do something similar for the chemistry community (& those who interact with the chemistry community – you can define that quite liberally).
So, here is a Google Form that you can fill in if you wish: https://forms.gle/gF9MLUGMWs23EFix6
And it feeds into this Google Sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1qdJvHHvu-BC4N6nk1jNMhTwoBrIaqHLUCZRf9pCQwDs/edit?usp=sharing
