Usually, glass of various properties is made by differential melting through heating. A team led by scientists from the University of Padua used DESY’s PETRA III light source to melt glass using X-rays without changing its temperature. But they found something out of this world: the atoms in the irradiated glass jump much like cosmic particles in outer space.
