Usually, glass of various properties is made by differential melting through heating. A team led by scientists from the University of Padua used DESY’s PETRA III light source to melt glass using X-rays without changing its temperature. But they found something out of this world: the atoms in the irradiated glass jump much like cosmic particles in outer space. Results in @PNASNews. desy.de/news/news_search/index

Attention all postdocs! We are looking for an experienced researcher to join our research group at Charles University, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Department of Surface and Plasma Science. Our research focuses on constructing a Paul trap for trapping electrons and manipulating them using lasers. This is closely related to ultracold plasma research. The application deadline is the end of this month. You can find further information at mff.cuni.cz/en/faculty/job-opp and mhejduk.com. Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity - apply now! .

Today’s social media status quo isn’t cutting it, so Mozilla is exploring an alternative here on Mastodon. In early 2023, Mozilla will be testing a publicly accessible instance in the Fediverse at Mozilla.Social. We will keep you updated, but for now learn more here: mzl.la/3BNXQMQ

Admittedly, these days #mastodons have a very special place in our hearts😉 🥰, so this new research really speaks to us! The oldest #DNA ever recovered, from permafrost in Greenland, has revealed that the elephant-like creatures roamed northern #Greenland 2 million years ago. Now a barren polar desert, the area apparently used to be a lush landscape of trees & home to a diverse flora & fauna. 🤗 *Go mastodons, go!* 🐘 😉 nature.com/articles/d41586-022

Solid mercury became the first known superconductor in 1911, when the physicist Heike Kammerlingh Onnes cooled the element to liquid helium temperatures. While mercury was later classed as a conventional superconductor, its behaviour was never fully explained, nor was its critical temperature predicted from first-principles #theory – until now. #physics #superconductivity #HistoryOfScience

We, the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) are the largest research institute in the world specializing in general relativity and beyond. Our institute is located in Potsdam and in Hannover where it closely collaborates with the Leibniz Universität Hannover. #introduction

Happy to be on #Mastodon! here is a short #introduction : I will be mostly tweeting (ehm, posting) about quantum physics, machine learning, and quantum computing. I will occasionally post conference announcements, open-source releases from our community, job opportunities to join my research group (CQSL) at #EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland, and more!
