@samwilson It looks like this identifier has changed it was added late last year, for example checkout this entry (wikidata.org/wiki/Q2900494).

I don't think this identifier is official, it feels more like an internal website ID, when working with the source data found on data.gov I uniquely identify a charity by it's ABN.

What are your thoughts on this? My gut is it should be deprecated.

@samwilson Your comment on the dataset had me digging.

I've previously worked with the Austrlian Charities register and wondered how I could link this with WikiData.

I found the property P10081 (wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P10) that seems close to what I'm after, but I don't think it's widely used.

@samwilson I love all these adhoc tools that pop up, probably out of necessity, to keep the wheel on the bus!

@fyrfli Is Kimai paid? or are you most concerned with the cost of hosting it? Seems to have good recommendations online.

I wonder if something like fly.io would suit to host it free of charge?

@fyrfli Oh sorry to say it's an Android app, I'm not sure if it supports collaboration.

@samwilson Oh thats neat! I might double check my local parts are loaded in.

Do you have an projects that use wiki data that you're fond of?

Is it kind of like open data, but linked in with an existing knowledge graph?

@fyrfli I've been using an app called Time Recording for probably close to 8-9 years now. It's not the prettiest, but once setup it works wonders.

It didn't have ads when I first started using it, and I use the pro version now so it doesn't bug me.

At one point when I did more freelance work I used it's spreadsheet & PDF export feature to provide invoices.

@flexnib @hugh Oh thanks! She frequents neither unfortunately, but if I have any concrete questions I'll reach out 😁

@hugh Thanks for the extra detail! I'll pass all of this along.

It's interesting, in my mind there are some public goods, things like academia, libraries, government services in which I always idolized as being truly meaningful work, and in darker days working in larger companies I would fantasize about moring to (particularly academia).

Not to disparage the good intentions of those working in these fields, but it's just insane how far reaching a profit motive will infect.

Appreciate all that you do, and the time you've taken to share these details.

@hugh Thank you! I'll pass all of it along. The podcast sounds very appealing!

Appreciate the the time taken to reply.

When you mention cynical, is this fairly pervasive in the field? Is it a case of "I love the job, but XYZ"? Or maybe some kind of correlation between the type of people using Mastodon and unhappy Librarians?

Apologies if I'm prying, genuinely curious whenever I talk to those in other fields.

Hey @hugh and more broadly AusGLAM.

My partner is considering a career change, one of the fields she mentioned was Librarian.

If you were talking to someone with just a surface level understanding of the field, the pathway into it and what the day to day would look like.

Do you have any resources you'd point them to?

@petahopkins I'm not a Dupral person, but generally a web person. Do you have a public link to this?

@samwilson Oh hello! Cool to see people popping up from my neck of the woods 😁

I remember seeing so many of your contributions of OSM when I first started editing my suburb. Thanks for everything you do!

Slowly starting to understand what's going on over here on Mastodon!

What felt difficult to navigate when I have tried this over the years, is starting to feel more like individually managed sub-reddits cross with twitter! Amazing!

This is worth sharing.

It's an animated GIF where every frame is a valid QR code that leads to the "Never Gonna Give You Up" rickroll.

That's kind of amazing.

@astromecanik Oh interesting I guess I got lucky with my first choice!

Was it a server load thing at all? or just more people about here?

@astromecanik Where did you move from and to?

I'm wondering if it's worth moving to other instances?

Hey there 👋

I'm Tim, a web developer from Australia, interested in all things web, , .

Poking my head in to see what's going on.
