I have a long-lingering #DataViz query that I still haven't resolved in a way I'm happy with. I have 2-dimensions of #CategoricalData over time that I'd like to #visualize, plus the (time-varying, statistical) association between them. I can compute all the information fine, it's just how to clearly present these 4 elements in a digestable way.
For any single panel, #MosaicPlots work for the associations. We've used color-scaled #AlluvialFlows before, but I'm still not satisfied w/the result.
Preserving the twitter follower graph
Given that you're here, you probably share my concern and perhaps share my pessimism of about Twitter's long-term prospects.
Twitter was invaluable for scientists to share research results, discuss papers, find collaborators, etc.
My friend @beatty is working to preserve the science twitter follower graph just in case Twitter melts down or goes bankrupt as Musk has suggested.

Time for an #introduction! I'm a research scientist at MIT and I run http://lookit.mit.edu, a platform for remote infant & child development studies.
I'm generally interested in open science, big collaborations, and building tools for reproducible science & data management. I love being curious about how & why we work the way we do!
My research background is in language acquisition and cognitive development (event semantics! transitive verbs!)
Some projects:
The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.
For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).
"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.
There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.
It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.
Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.
I've been on @Mastodon for a few weeks, but have not done an #introduction yet...
I'm a professor of Geography and Environment at the University of Hawai'i. I've written four books on #borders and #immigration. I'm also the Editor-in-Chief of the journal @Geopolitics
I mostly post about border politics and freedom of movement, with a few photos of Hawai'i too, usually timed for wintry weather elsewhere 😂

Ok, #introduction time!
I'm an Assoc Professor (tenured recently enough that saying it comes with a squee!) at Michigan State. I'm primarily in the CMSE dept, secondary appointment in Math.
My research is in Topological Data Analysis. I love making the complicated accessible. I'm proudest of my students and postdocs. I want to make my little corner of academia better than the one I survived.
Off the internet, I love #crossStitch, #boardGames, my family, learning #Arabic, and #badSciFi.

I'm Angela Zhou, new assistant professor at USC Marshall #DataScience and #Operations #orms #operationsresearch
I work on data-driven decision-making under uncertainty: #machinelearning #optimization #causalinference
enriching a point of view between #statistics and optimization
I'm also interested in substantive equity (#algorithmicfairness). My technical research takes a pragmatic stance on this, i.e. challenges for disparity assessment and substantive work in CJ reform
