@radehi wonderful... tickers were a styling element that showed what server a post was from, sadly is its gone now.

I HAD to bring this gorgeous Norwegian #rock face with me from the bird site :)

This rock face was likely #gneiss, a foliated #metamorphic rock where light minerals and dark minerals form in alternating bands due to high heat and pressure. This rock was further complexly folded and refolded during continental collisions and mountain building.

The rock face also has an unusual & beautiful texture caused by the more erodible bands partially eroding.

Learning this new platform -- so here is an #introduction .

I'm an introvert who is passionate about #genealogy and #cats. My day job is wrangling data and I might mention #SQL.

I am a blue dot living near the east coast of the US, but am a native of the high desert of Northern #Arizona. I love #photos from #AZ and around the world.

At under 70, I hate to admit that I have great-grandchildren. I want them to live in a clean world with unlimited opportunities.

Since there was interest, I have set up a Google Form/Sheet for Earth Scientists on Mastodon.

Interested in #geology and #EarthScience and want people to find you? Add your name.

However, please do not add anyone who is not you without explicit permission - some people might prefer to be discovered more organically, or not at all.

Ok let's take this thing for a spin..

So, I wrote a book chapter recently! Disproportionately excited bc I'm private sector, so publishing anything is not like, a thing for me. Working on that.

Anyway, in it I talk about how to usefully examine climate risk as a decision-maker for a high-impact hazard with big error bars:

Conclusions? Read on... 🧵

While I agree with these authors that the citizen science app #iNaturalist is an essential source of biodiversity data, their conclusion of “experts should all give free labor to make it work” is really odd.

The conclusion should be, “this vital service is a public good, and like other public goods it merits public funding to support more expert public servants who make it work.”

I scribbled fun notes over the pages of a recent paper of mine, summarizing and explaining each section. I've gotten good feedback on this idea, so I'm sharing it here in the hopes that others are inspired to create accessible versions of their papers!

Hi, I'm Aoife - archaeologist based in Denmark. Using #dendrochronology I discover the age of old timber structures. Better though is discovering WHERE the trees grew. Because then I can map contacts between past people, as they built vessels to sail the world. My work is often key to identifying historic shipwrecks. Recently we could identify the Swedish warship Äpplet (1629) - sister ship of Vasa (1628). #archaeology #shipwrecks #knowledgeofthehumanpast

The #Tonga/#Fiji #earthquake sequence is not done yet! Another very deep M7.0 #quake today, 100s of km North of the previous deep events in the region a few days ago.

This most recent #Fiji M7.0 earthquake is not as close to the bottom of the local #intraslab seismicity as the previous deep #earthquakes a few days ago.

Tip for newbies: filling in the text description for pics posted is, I have learned, really appreciated. There’s a sizeable community of the visually impaired over here and doing it means they’re not excluded. Also, it’s fun to do. If you’re on your phone, tap on the pic and start typing. (I didn’t realise I could go that) On the desktop app you’re given a prompt. It’s super easy.

We are extremely excited to share with the climate community (and beyond) the new and improved "Climate Data Guide" (by NCAR).

Explore the background behind 100s of different #weather and #climate datasets, along with the statistical tools to analyze them.

Also, feel free to reach out to the board of advisors if you have any suggests or data inputs! 🥰

Hello Masto, I'm Dr Echo Rivera.

An #AltAc who decided to help academics/researchers create more engaging talks and lectures.

For me, it's about accessibility and inclusivity.

#DeathByPowerpoint is a funny punchline, but it's also inaccessible. It creates barriers and we need to take it more seriously.

I'm here to help.

🙏 Give this a boost & follow me if you'd like tips for creating #BetterPresentations.

Sometimes all it takes is to pay attention and let the beauty and extraordinary resilience of little critters wash into you.

Lasioglossum (possibly) unwittingly pollinating brambles. Watch the bee now, imagine the blackberries.

So with some valuable feedback from @mikamckinnon, here is the revised version of the second guideline:

2. When I am discussing the causes of a geological disaster, or other scientific information about it, whilst that disaster is ongoing, and in the immediate aftermath, I will also use a content warning. Hashtags will either be generic (#earthquake) or a modified version of the public hashtag for that event (#HoodEruptionScience), so my posts do not drown out more important/urgent info.
