When I joined Mastodon, everyone was saying “just pick a server (instance) it doesn’t really matter which one.” I saw Universeodon and thought “hey, that sounds cool!” Turns out it’s literally for people who love planets and space! 😂 Oops!!

Probably not a lot of people know this now, but Mastodon's web app started out with "Publish". In 2016 a famous YouTuber jokingly offered to support Mastodon's Patreon forever if I changed the button to say "Toot" instead. Needless to say, this was a really early, and not very informed decision. The first glimpse of attention and financial support. As a non-native speaker I had no idea there was another meaning.

I always saw the Blue Check as having nothing to do with account verification. There were always better ways to establish account verification.

No, the Blue Check was a simple means to establish a class system of users.

To those who had it, Twitter gave you privileges—created the notion that if you had a Blue Check, you were more important to them.
