Moving to new instance, fediverse drama

It’s with a heavy heart that I’m moving to another instance. This will be the 3rd server I’ve used in the very short time since I started using Mastodon.

I’m not moving because I don’t like .org — it’s a wonderful community. I also appreciate the many useful features which its operators have added.

Unfortunately after the recent nazi attack at least one other well known instance, .io, has “suspended” (blocked) qoto. The reason given on their about page is ‘Federating hate speech in the name of “free speech”’, which is TOTAL FUCKING ! Hate speech isn’t tolerated here as evidenced by even the most casual glance at the local timeline.

Unfortunately there’s at least one person on that instance whose posts I enjoy. Since the whole point of being on Mastodon is communication, this unfair disruption by the leadership has forced this move. While I hope that @nova@hachyderm.wtf (interesting that they themself recently moved away from hachy…) comes to their senses, I’m not waiting around.

for the local feed: remember mastodon isn't magic and the rules of crime remain the same.
1. don't do crime
2. don't do crime with two people that can be done with one.
3. don't do crime with three people that can be done with two.
4. don't do crime that requires three or more people because one of them is going to be a cop.
5. bonus rule don't write about the crimes you aren't doing anywhere (signal, mastodon, twitter, livejournal, facebook, telegram, whatsapp, your journal)

Jumping off what @blaine is saying here:

I work in professional fact-checking and content moderation for my day job at meedan.com and I have begun conversations about ways to do content moderation as a federated service that admins can pay to subscribe to (where moderators are paid a living wage, maybe in worker owned coops even, as opposed to big social media companies using basically sweatshop moderation labor)

@freemo oh, so this is the tool that people were talking about? So is there no other way currently available?

@freemo is there some way of finding out who is blocking who without visiting every individual instance’s about page?

@scottmatter Unfortunately choosing a mastodon instance has ramifications that new users probably won’t be aware of. Also, the instance one is on can be blocked at any time by any other instance. It’s like the post office refusing to deliver mail from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles.

@freemo I sent them the link, perhaps that will help. I know you’ve been fighting the good fight for a long time, and this recent mess is none of your fault. Hopefully not too many other large instances are going to block us.

@trinsec I have no plans to move, and I’m sure they don’t either. I guess there’s nothing to do but accept the situation. Unfortunately, it appears that the members of qoto have been reamed by the nazis.

It’s a bummer that is being blocked by , a friend just moved to that instance a few days ago. :sad_cat:

I'm no Stephen Hawking, but I think what happens is that they cancel each other out.

Some quick notes on how we might build some of the essential infrastructure and governance processes that will be needed if #Mastodon is really going to be sustainable and viable as a mass-adoption social network (1/n):

If you want to support the cause please leave a comment at my reddit post, good or bad, we need to discuss this.
