Periodic reminder that I run the Fediverse AU #Mastodon server for #Australian #NZ #research and #university organisations who don't have a home on Mastodon.
And here's a piece I wrote on why universities are reluctant to run their own Mastodon servers (recently updated with information on referrer tracking and social media platform support)

I don't really buy much music these days, and when I do I'm happy to buy it digitally directly from artists or on physical disk. For people who aren't very tech savvy, what are the relatively easy ways to buy digital music that they can play on their devices without completely giving the musical artists a raw deal?
To emphasize, here I'm talking buying music, not a streaming service, but I'm probably looking for something easier than buying physical disks and ripping them. Is there such a thing?

Another week of seeing patients in family medicine. Masks will always be required in our office. To protect newborns, seniors, people with diabetes, pregnant people, people with cancer, essential workers, my staff, myself, my family. There’s nobody whose health I’d risk. #MaskUp
This one is personal: Dan was a friend.... Mourning a philosophical giant: Philosopher Daniel Dennett dead at 82. Part of the "New Atheist" movement, Dennet was best known for work on consciousness, free will. https://arstechnica.com/science/2024/04/philosopher-daniel-dennett-dead-at-82/

Post News, which sought to be a Twitter alternative, is shutting down. I have 5.8k followers there but rarely use it. I decided I’ve bandwidth for only two platforms after putting my Twitter accounts in suspended automation — Threads is one of them and Mastodon is the other. https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/19/24135011/twitter-alternative-post-news-shutdown

Tell the truth about Biden’s economy. "Trying to make voters appreciate the connection between inflation and wage growth — or the fact that the United States has done a superlative job of navigating a worldwide economic crisis — may be a quixotic task. But it is not an inherently classist or condescending one." https://www.vox.com/24134257/biden-economy-inflation-wages-interest-rate
We just lost another great light of rationalism. Dan Dennett helped get me started in philosophy of mind way back in the late '80s. Dan was right about lots of things. https://dailynous.com/2024/04/19/daniel-dennett-death-1942-2024/
Final coffee thought for this morning is this image popped into my head while someone was giving me unasked for advice and now you must be subjected to it:
imagine I am climbing up the outside of a skyscraper mission impossible style with all kinds of wild gear I made for myself and from inside the skyscraper on the other side of the windows, which they can't perceive, people yell advice based on their experience of navigating to the top by pressing elevator buttons

As @pluralistic reminds us, capitalists absolutely hate capitalism, and they're systematically returning us to their favorite system: feudalism.
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
