@tess Yuuuup. I had this actual convo.
ME: So we shouldn't worry about Skynet?
MY FRIEND THE ALGO EXPERT: (laughs) No.
ME: But we should worry that an insurance algorithm might kill someone by denying them care.
MY FRIEND: (instantly serious) Oh yeah. That is definitely already happening.
The extent of both #Antarctic and #Arctic sea ice remain anomalously low, which is also not too far from last year's historic satellite-era record...

The Kavernacle has a great video on "Anti Sunscreen Ticktok" He's been exploring the various anti-science trends online and what is making them so popular.
I'd like to remind all of the brown skin'd folks that yes, you too need sunscreen. We don't burn as easily and that is some protection, but you can still get cancer, also it ages your skin. Butter up, the sun is angry and mean.
This is wild: I’ve been able to make a test WordPress site interact with my Mastodon account *and* my Bluesky account! Posts and replies go through, but likes don’t It’s not super smooth – yet. But the potential is huge! Open protocols are so cool #SocialWeb
Well, it finally happened. One of the kid’s friends sent her a link to a YouTube video featuring this tweet and asked “Is that you??”

@rmondello @johnbrayton Whoa whoa whoa - this tells me that I definitely am not ready to move anything over to a passkey - definitely cannot be locked into one system just yet.
I keep meaning to write about what management problems we are actually trying to solve and why misnomers like "full-stack" keep leading us astray. There is a genuine problem here. But trying to ask every individual engineer to stretch across the entirety of today's complex stacks is just not a viable solution. Or even a reasonable one.

I’m sorry, but for some reason there are exactly two types of humans in industrial cybersecurity. 95% are mission driven and incredibly fun and kind. 5% are very angry and gatekeepy senior people who want to prevent anyone else from ever contributing to the field. #ICSCybersecurity
A new episode of Change, Technically is up!! ☺️💃 We dig into: "Who's technical?"
Do developers feel understood? Do we understand what technical work is? What happens when we discover people have expertise we didn't plan for? What happened when I asked a hundred undergrads to redesign college admissions?!
Plus @analog_ashley and I drop so much empirical evidence I had to spend an hour putting these show notes together
Guion Stewart Bluford Jr. became the first Black American astronaut to travel into space #OTD in 1983, on the Orbiter Challenger as part of mission STS-8.

Physicist Ernest Rutherford was born in Brightwater, New Zealand #OTD in 1871.
He discovered the nucleus, proton, and α and β particles; explained nuclear decay; and was the first person to successfully transmute one element into another.

This is absolutely nuts. SQL Injection 101 attack on a site authorized by DHS for TSA vetting of known crew members. I’d bet there aren’t even audit logs that would be able to show if the system was tampered with.
How many other auxiliary sites with deep ties into critical infrastructure are this poorly secured?
NASA's solar sail test brings up a nice question for high school physicists: how does conservation of momentum work when a massless photon hitting a sail with mass changes the sail's velocity?
Putting out the call again: does any #mastoadmin know of a managed hosting solution for Mastodon that supports Mastodon forks?
Theoretical physicist by training (PhD in quantum open systems/quantum information), University lecturer for a bit, and currently paying the bills as an engineer working in optical communication (implementation) and quantum communication (concepts), though still pursuing a little science on the side. I'm interested in physics and math, of course, but I enjoy learning about really any area of science, philosophy, and many other academic areas as well. My biggest other interest is hiking and generally being out in nature.
