If by practical you mean capable of handling day-to-day human conversation such as how are you feeling, how did your day go, what's a good place to eat, I think my bf loves someone else, I just saw a funny show on Netflix you have to watch it etc... Then toki pona is your language.

If by practical you mean doing your groceries, making a doctor's appointment, doing your homework or teaching computer technology, then you'll find it lacking.

toki pona works best as an intimacy or personal language, used to talk about personal thoughts and experiences. It isn't designed as an auxiliary language and it lacks in terms of precision and categorization, which in turn favors an even more deep and personal communication. Dog and cats are just "soweli" so it's not the best language to run a veterinary office, but at the same time, when you want to talk about your pets separately you might have to talk about the red animal and the lazy animal, which gives me more information about your animals and the way you see them, than if you mentioned just your dog and your cat.
