It's 70 years since the devastating #NorthSeaFloods of 1953. Their impact in the Netherlands + Belgium is pretty well known, but I'm often surprised how little people in the UK are aware of the history.
Around 500 people in total lost their lives, including 300 on land in England when #CanveyIsland was flooded. The rest were lost at sea from ferry + fishing boats.
As a result the #ThamesBarrage + #HumberBarrage were built.

@jenkinsad0 @Ruth_Mottram Ditto. I used to live in Wivenhoe in Essex, where there is a tidal barrier (a late response to this flooding), and there are lots of sea defences in the region.
