Possibly the most frightening talent of the brown bear is an uncanny ability to blend seamlessly into the environment in an almost chameleon-like manner, allowing them to easily surprise their unsuspecting prey.

Quick question to people who teach first year university (any subject, any country). Did you make any changes to your course because your incoming students had their education disrupted by #COVID19 ? #HigherEducation

@auschwitzmuseum I edited a piece about the architects of Auschwitz once. Somehow, knowing how those buildings were deliberately, carefully designed and constructed to suit their vile purpose really brought home the horror. #NeverForget #NeverAgain

Small #FediTip: if you encounter a message or thread that is in any way useful to you, bookmark it straight away.

Since the fediverse doesn't have full text searches, it will be very difficult to find that particular thing again a few days later. Especially if you cannot remember who posted it or it has no hashtags.

Periodically review your bookmarks to do something with them and you should be set.

Firstly, I'd just like to say thank you to all the people who have liked, boosted and commented on my images, and to all the new followers I have. It's rather humbling. 😊

Today's shot comes from a magical day in the Scottish #Highlands, a few years ago, when I was photographing red squirrels.

These charming characters are incredibly agile and can jump great distances between trees.

Here I managed to capture one as it appears to be flying down my lens.

Today's picture is of Antony Gormley's Angel of the North. It's just outside Gateshead, Tyne & Wear.
I just love it - it looks wonderful in all weathers and from all angles.

@YasminAli It wouldn't be out of place in a Dickens novel ....

@RichardJMurphy I was hoping you would come to that conclusion. 🙂 Apparently the preferred approach to threading is to make the first Toot ‘public’, and all the follow-on Toots ‘unlisted’.

@MrTChace I read somewhere that following back is more usual and expected on Mastodon then it is on Twitter ... that it isn't seen as "cool" to have many more followers than you are following. I think Mastodon aims to take the ego out of follower/following ratios by not having any sort of algorithm to factor in to the whole notion. I don't know if that helps as it doesn't address the bot issue! But, on the whole, I find it a lot more friendly over here, and have to wonder if perhaps the lack of algorithm renders bots less likely to pursue a follower count ...?

Where has the term immunity debt come from- certainly not immunology- your immune system is not a muscle that needs constant exposure. There is for example Evidence of immune memory persisting 90 years after the flu pandemic. It seems to be an excuse to avoid investing in clean air for schools n buildings and not project our kids with vaccines.

@DanKaszeta@mastodonapp.uk It's good to see you here 😊

“..Why do you always carry a giant carrot around?”
Nathan: “To make people smile… You see, one day I went to an op shop and I bought a giant turnip. I was carrying it home and noticed how much it made people smile. That made me feel really good! ..then I made the giant carrot and carried it around town and I noticed a big difference. The diversity of people smiling and the number of people smiling was much greater. So I just kept carrying the carrot around because it was the most successful thing at making people smile.

I try to get out as often as possible but you have to be in the mood to do something like this… today I’ve been out here for about an hour and a half and I’ve had hundreds and hundreds of smiles. This is what’s so good about it, if I want to do something good I just grab the carrot and head on out.”

I'm in Leeds this weekend for my sister's hen do. As part of the celebrations we went to a pub called Wapentake and I learned something:
