Every year at Christmas now I think about Christmas 8 years ago when I nearly died with my wife, child and in-laws.

I share this every year over on the Bird Site and will share it here now.

It was Christmas Eve. 9 year old was just 1. We were staying at my in-laws who had an acreage just outside Red Deer at the time. We went to bed a bit late but the night was good. 1 year old wasn’t up too much.

Is there a pre-existing hashtag on Mastodon to find PhD position posts? I'm interested in seeing if there's anything out there in the Not-particularly-faddish directions I pursue.

Inspired by @RichardKeppler ’s post over on the old site, I’d like to wish a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all you awesome people who were in this online space before me (thank you for your welcome, acceptance, and/or tolerance) and all of you newbies with whom I flocked over here.

The German word "Bescherung" describes the handing out of Christmas gifts. But it's also used for a mishap or mess.

So, the sentence "Da haben wir die Bescherung" can mean
- "That's when we hand out the gifts"
or
- "There you are, what a mess!"

And the sentence "Das ist ja eine schöne Bescherung!" can mean
- "That is a beautiful Christmas celebration!"
or
- "What an incredible mess!"

For Xmas, I wish you all the former, not the latter, enjoy your Bescherung - and our language!

Please suggest a cool paper/preprint in your field in the last year.

For a course I teach, I am collecting papers: cell/dev bio, microbio, neuro, maths/stats/CS/chem/phys applied to biology.

Students use a paper as the basis for a "research grant application" that they will write. So papers that are cool but also open doors to future study are ideal. Do you know one? It can be your own, I don't mind!
