This year will be the year of the rabbit 🐇

The Okazaki Shrine, also known as the Rabbit Shrine is a Shinto Shrine in Kyoto that is dedicated to the kami Susano-no-Mikoto and Kushinadahime-no-Mikoto from Japanese mythology. They had many children, five sons, and three daughters so the shrine is known for prosperity and childbirth, especially for those who are trying to conceive. The rabbits surrounding the shrine are also seen as a sign of fertility.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻?

@laurentperrinet asked about the timing but processing it not sequential in the brain. A much better way of thinking about it is in terms of "mutliple waves" of activity flowing in parallel with lots of shortcuts such that latencies in frontal cortex can be shorter than in other parts actually.

I'll follow up in a thread.

I let myself get incredibly burnt out last year. My number one goal for this year is to establish more healthy habits, but as I work through the faculty app and transition process I know that is only going to get harder. I'd love to hear any advice (especially from new-ish faculty!) for maintaining sanity during this process!

#neuroscience folks: need examples in nervous systems of a bowtie architecture - in signaling pathways (e.g., calcium signaling) where a ton of inputs go into a fairly small central core and then a ton of outputs fan out. Are there any neural structures that work like that? non-neural examples:
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/257985
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/169164
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/191422
Anything like that, structurally, in biological nervous systems?

Bohemian Rhapsody for postdocs

Is this a real job?
Or more like a PhD?
Caught in short contracts
No chance of stability

Open your eyes
Look up to PIs and see
I'm just a postdoc
I get no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go
Stress is high
Pay is low

This will become a mega-thread. I will introduce one arctic-alpine plant species every day this year (or until my private photo archive runs out…).

These species are small and beautiful, fragile but hardy. Many are already endangered, and many will be losers in a warming world. Each one has earned our attention.
