Most of my work has been in #julialang, developing #foss packages for probabilistic programming (#probprog) and #measuretheory. More generally, I'm interested in #bayesian #stats, performance algorithms, composability, and #functionalprogramming. I love learning and #mentoring, and I've been a team lead and IC, enjoying both.

It's really quite exciting starting up on Mastodon.
Rather like opening a door in a wall and suddenly finding you are in a party with some old friends and lots of new interesting people.
As one who was an early adopter of Twitter, it also is very reminiscent of the old days when I first realised how useful social media could be for meeting new people and learning new stuff.

Some advise for new peeps on Mastodon:

The people you're following would generally *love* to follow you back IF you:
* Post an #Introduction toot and pin it
* Fill out your profile's bio
* Put in a profile picture

Whenever I get a follow request and there's no profile pic, no bio, no intro, and no toots posted yet in general, I don't follow back, because I don't know anything about that person. It's like being introduced to a person wearing a bag over their head. ;)

A simple way to find your Twitter friends on Mastodon :

1- type “Mastodon” into the Twitter search bar

2- click the 3 dots to the right of the search bar with "people you follow" in the Search filters

3- Scroll through tweets from people you follow who have mentioned Mastodon

For those of us who came from Twitter: here, clicking "favorite" is different from clicking "like" in Twitter. It just tells the writer "yeah, nice", without enhancing visibility. The only way to enhance visibility is to "boost" (basically, retweet). I suspect all this will change (different clients will have different algorithms, etc) but for now this is how it is...

Mastodon Lists:

As in twitter, lists can be created of a subset of those you follow (a difference from twitter is that you must follow the person to include them in a list). Very useful feature when you just want to see the toots from a certain grouping.
