So we just made an Open Access Biological Psychology textbook! It was the result of lots of work by many lovely contributors in Sussex and around the UK but you can read it For Free ANYWHERE!! Https://openpress.sussex.ac.uk/introductiontobiologicalpsychology/ #psychology #neuroscience #openscience
Nature has just put out correspondence that calls for scholarly institutes to join the #fediverse, and start their own #mastodon instances.
Together with that, the writers put out a longer article, 'Mastodon over Mammon', that explains the argument in greater detail, and is worth reading.
Great work by @brembs et al, which points to the core issue: the private ownership of public commons.

Many scholars are leaving Twitter for #Mastodon, a public, decentralized alternative, impervious to private take-over:
https://www.science.org/content/article/musk-reshapes-twitter-academics-ponder-taking-flight
Scholarly organizations are already supporting this migration:
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-023-00486-3
and
https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7643817
There are analogous solutions for another public good in private hands: journals. There are even levers the scholarly community could pull to incentivize an analogous migration:

What are we waiting for?
Looking forward to @dbssocietyorg in Grenoble – w/ @VVV_Cologne @ClementHamani @AA_Kuhn @rubensgcury @HSiebner and many not on twitter (see program below).
⏰ Abstract Deadline: March 17th
✅ Conference: June 22-24th

It's here! "A Student's Guide to Open Science" has landed on my doorstep. A perfectly sized pocket guide to the replication crisis and #openscience reform. I am so proud of what this book represents ✨
A brief overview...🧵
Nice piece: “Stop the peer-review treadmill: I want to get off”. I think the days of pre-publication peer review are already numbered. To maintain it there needs to be better incentives - and I don’t mean payment! Recognition of peer review activity as a scholarly contribution would help a lot.
"Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1), a receptor for capsaicin and noxious heat, has been one of the most compelling targets for analgesics. However, systemic inhibition of TRPV1 is an impractical approach as a pain killer, since systemic antagonism induces hyperthermia. Two articles in this issue of the JCI report phenotypes from separate, rare missense mutations of human TRPV1."
Since there are many #statistics and #data people here, please boost and share widely this rare recruitment call from #Unesco Institute of Statistics. UIS is #hiring a senior management team to update it as a modern stats organisation. UIS is the home of global #education statistics and monitoring progress towards the #SDG 4.

This is the second YouTube/podcast of an hours length I had the patience to hear and watch entirely. (The first was Chris Frith with Tevi Naidu.)
I’m hiring! This is a good fit for someone looking for some research experience in between undergrad and med school or grad school. The research is on sexual harassment in biomedical research. Please share with folks who might be interested!
