A senior of mine who plays the same game as me: you can broadcast gaming during tutorial as protest

The air circulation is so bad in the office space, I cannot seem to breath on such a rainy night.

So, today and tomorrow are UCU strike days. I am internally conflicted about tomorrow's tutorials.

Toots with more than three hashtags make me dizzy.

Hello #Mastodon, if you know a Black woman student (HS/College/Graduate School) or early career, I am going need you to lend me your ears.

The Sadie Collective, a nonprofit bringing resources and community to Black women in quantitive and social science fields, is award $6000 AWARDS and all expense paid trips to their annual conference.

As someone who participated in this inaugural program, PLEASE PLEASE share widely. #econtwitter #economics #sociology #science #academia #academic

Given longstanding evidence of discrimination by race and gender, I also randomly assigned applicant names that implied they were a:
-Black man,
-Black woman,
-White man, or
-White woman

Employers offered 30% fewer positive responses to applicants with names suggesting they were Black men, offering stark evidence of ongoing labor market discrimination at a time when many employers were publicly proclaiming greater commitments to equity in hiring practices.

It feels like data is the crucial point of many papers that I am reading recently. Data that only wealthy countries are collecting or allowing access.

Striking image of life expectation dispersion in different age groups and wealth percentiles.

I continuously quote Paul Krugman's comment "Listen to the Gentiles" when discussing how to make progress on important questions:

"RULES FOR RESEARCH

In the course of describing my formative moment in 1978, I have already implicitly given my four basic rules for research. Let me now state them explicitly, then explain. Here are the rules:

1. Listen to the Gentiles

2. Question the question

3. Dare to be silly

4. Simplify, simplify"

I like that PNAS has this little significance box, kinda like an executive summary. A little repetitive with the abstract, but much easier to read.

Among children who had first mental illness claim between 10 and 17, average age was 12.

Reading research like this also serves a therapy to my past self. The sense of validation and recognition is really powerful.

qoto.org's "Mastodon Dark Theme" appears light and is extremely slow.

“There is discrepancy in rate of good degree classes achieved by Black, Asian and minority ethnic students…” So finally someone high up enough has decided that it is a thing? Oh, by the by, I never saw any Black peer in my MRes and PhD programme, how about we fix that as well?

I get bad impressions when mailing lists do not Bcc individual receivers.

Today a friend of mine told me that I should do theory instead of applied after discussing a tutorial problem set, and we had this conversation of applied vs theory again.

Having aimed to be a theorist for my entire undergrad and half of master's, I know too well how an immature theorist could get lost in their beautiful and delicate equations, but overlook the real world. I'd rather not go back to that mindset.

Flight attendant: I'm sorry but you are only allowed to bring two carry-on items on this flight.

Economist: I only have two!

Attendant: Then what are you holding in your hand?

Economist: Just an NBER appendi...

Attendant: Yea sorry that's heavier than what we can allow on the plane, so you may have to have it checked as overweight baggage.

While the rest of the world pondering over transgender rights, labour economists are excluding female workers in their datasets for having poor data (because of largely male leaders).
