It would be easy to dismiss this trend as merely exasperating — a source of irritation at family gatherings — but over the past 18 months, this partisan divide may have cost as many as 60,000 American lives

This is the stark implication of a study by @paulgp and others, which found that since Covid vaccines became widely available, the mortality rate of registered Republicans in Ohio and Florida climbed by 33% during America’s winter Covid wave last year, compared with just 10% among Democrats

Morning folks, time for my first Mastodon thread (!)

Ahead of the #midterms tomorrow, I want to talk about the tragic politicisation of science in the US.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when the Republicans became the anti-science party, but the process probably began in the 1980s, when the Christian right first emerged as a major force in conservative American politics.

Since then, the journey has been smooth and swift, and there is now a stunning partisan divide on confidence in science 😥

Putin ally Prigozhin (St Petersburg troll farm/Wagner)

“Gentlemen, we interfered, we are interfering and we will interfere,” Prigozhin, who has been accused of running a “troll factory” to influence the outcome of votes in several western countries. ..Carefully, precisely, surgically and the way we do it, the way we can,” Prigozhin quipped.

Bivalve aquaculture can be an extremely efficient way to produce protein, in terms of greenhouse gases emitted per unit protein. They don't require as complex of a food supply chain and clean the water in the process of growing! They can also be grown on suspended ropes and other ways that don't cause habitat destruction, unlike shrimp farming. They also produce less nitrogenous waste than other animals. #clamfacts

I don't think Mastodon or the fediverse has ever received this much attention before. It's a great opportunity for people to finally see that social media can be done differently, that it can be a protocol not under control of any single company.

Do you love #biodiversity and want to help #creatures from smaller #mammals like #hedgehogs over #insects or #spiders up to #soillife? Especially before winter, #deadwood is important for the #garden. #Hibernators find shelter in it. And #insects, #spiders and #beetles live here during the year. #Earthworms find moisture under it, even in hot summers, as do #fungi, #mosses and #lichens.
If you examine the #soil under deadwood, you will see how new #humus is created. Reserve a shady corner for this. If you have to remove such a pile, do it in spring when hedgehogs are active again. This is my huge pile from cutting #blackberries. Do you remember episode 1 of my #podcast #NatureMatchCuts? It's about "The Mess We Hate And The #Beauty Of #Brambles" - listen at https://naturematchcuts.net

Would you believe me if I told you I was extremely tired? But, the release candidate for Mastodon 4.0 is finally out of the way, and I think it's neat.

Morning all

While the US installed 30 gigawatts of renewable energy last year, China deployed 180GW. In 2021, China alone accounted for 46 percent of the world’s construction of new renewable energy infrastructure. China also dominates global production of solar panels, batteries, wind-turbines and electric vehicles. More than 80 percent of solar panel production is concentrated in China, and this is expected to reach over 95 percent by 2025

#Introduction:
I am a climate scientist with interests in better understanding historical changes in climate and extreme weather. Also think about future climate-related risks, among other topics: edhawkins.org

One key approach in this research is using citizen science to recover millions of lost weather observations, such as: WeatherRescue.org

I dabble in climate dataviz too, including the Climate Stripes: ShowYourStripes.info

Not sure how to get started here? 😅 Do this to start growing your network:

💠 Write yourself an intro toot and tag it with #introduction
💠 Hashtag your interests so people can find you
💠 Write like a human and show your personality 🤗
💠 Pin the toot to your profile (you might need to do that on web)

I promise this will help you find likeminded people, even if they are outside of your instance. Please consider boosting 🔁 to help others learn. Good luck!
