The Specials: Too much, much too young
#Threethings for Wed Nov 16: 1. The powerful #SLS rocket has launched, taking the uncrewed #ArtemisI mission to the Moon. Nice explainer from the BBC here: https://t.co/PttBvW1rVY 2. Had fun at Didcot Café Scientifique yesterday; stumped as ever by how to satisfyingly answer ‘but what is the #Universe expanding into?’. Anyone got good pithy answers? (‘It’s not’ is accurate but not satisfying) 3. Our mad #skyatnight on cosmic mysteries seems to have gone down well. On iplayer now
Ahead of a press conference on #JWST distant galaxies, #threethings for Thu Nov 17: 1. Raw JWST data showing #Titan were doing the rounds. Need experts to tell us what we’re seeing - features, or reflected light - but look! It’s a world! 2. studies of the #Winchcombe #meteorite support the idea that objects like this provided Earth’s water. My local observations confirm Earth has a lot of it. https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-63631563.amp 3. Sam Sweeney’s new album is fab #astrodon
Astonishing visit to #JodrellBank yesterday, where the new visitors’ centre is breathtaking, including digital projections onto pieces of the original #telescope surface. Completely worth a visit - & the Lovell itself was glorious in the winter twilight.
A lot of reporters want to talk about Elon and Twitter. Instead of responding to them, I'll just post something here and see if they can find it. It will be good practice for them in using Mastodon.
I think it will be a relief to Elon to go back to focusing on cars and rockets. Those are arguably more important problems anyway. And he could still do good things for Twitter too, if he hires the right CEO.
@demvoter @theghostoftomjoad @joyannreid @joshtpm @Davidtoddmccarty hi all, this list was lifted from my Forbes article - please share the link: https://www.forbes.com/sites/martineparis/2022/12/17/elon-musk-bans-journalists-on-twitter-as-more-flee-to-mastodon-heres-who-to-follow

@juddlegum if Twitter makes that change and Musk reruns the poll we’ll see just how few subscribers there are!
#JohnMastodon is proof that things *CAN* go viral here on Mastodon, but the key is that *YOU* are the algorithm. The reason that the John Mastodon meme showed up on other people's timelines is because so many users boosted the posts.
The lesson here is: please don't just favourite something if you really enjoyed it; BOOST it so that other people can enjoy it, too! This is the only reason why I bother to create as large a social graph as I can on Mastodon—to act as an amplifier. You can, too!❤️😉
Stunning survival of a 700-year old #medieval #fishing #weir in a vast landscape of mudbanks and water channels in the Fergus estuary, Co. Clare, Ireland, 1.5km from the nearest dryland. Fish dropping down with the ebbing tide were guided into the point of the weir, where they were trapped by baskets and nets. At low tide each day fisherman came by boat to build & repair the weirs and remove the catch.

Officially erased my bird site presence this morning and with it my associated contacts. I haven't seen a wide-scale migration yet of the #weather / #wxtwitter community, which accounted for half of my Twitter contacts.
As a sort of final #introduction post and calling card for the weather community, one of my primary uses of Twitter was to share my #WeatherPhotography and #storm reports. I'll probably continue to share weather and #climate content here! CW's as needed. Some of my faves below.
The policy that I allegedly retroactively violated by promoting my Instagram and Mastodon account, has now been deleted from Twitter’s website.

It's always interesting to see a past #landscape through the eyes of the people who inhabited it. This beautifully drawn and painted #map shows the #bridges, #weirs and #watermills across the river #Trent between Nottingham and Newark in the early 16thC in such loving detail that one can almost imagine standing on each site with the cartographer as he sketches.
The (enlargeable) map is online at https://www.bl.uk/collection-items/map-of-the-river-trent-and-its-tributaries-between-nottingham-and-newark

Now imagine if Mastodon didn’t exist and this was happening.…
Aren’t we lucky that some guy in Germany decided to spend his own time, money, and effort to build it?
Hopefully we’ll get lucky again…
Or, you know, maybe we can finally consider supporting tech that’s in the common good from the common purse. And fund organisations and long-term development, not just ad-hoc academic “projects” that get abandoned the moment the money is gone.
