A Pinky & Brain spin-off for grown ups that always starts with them sitting tired at coffee in the morning:

Pinky: "What are we going to do tonight?"
Brain: "Same thing we do every night. Try to go to bed early"

And then the whole episode is just about how stuff comes up and prevents them from going to bed early.

Just moderated a fascinating panel discussion on the FAIR principles for research software, as part of the Software Sustainability Research Software Camp (software.ac.uk/RSC-fair-softwa).

FAIR is not a magic wand, but the principles provided the perfect background and context to cover a wide variety of topcis, including software management plans, software sustainability, recognition and rewards, team work and collaboration, training and skills, openness and reproducibility.

"“OpenAI repeatedly argued to European officials that the forthcoming AI Act should not consider its general purpose AI systems…to be “high risk,” a designation that would subject them to stringent legal requirements including transparency, traceability, and human oversight."

Oohh noooz our stuff is so strong it might render humanity extinct.

But also no no our stuff shouldn’t be classified “high risk.”

One thing I own which is cool as hell is a vibrating reed based tachometer.

Lots and lots of tiny reeds, each tuned for a specific frequency. Place it on a piece of equipment, and the reeds start to vibrate if they're the same frequency as the equipment.

Universities often teach object-oriented design as being about the static structure of our OO code - types and relationships ("is a", "has a"). But good OO design focuses on how objects work together to achieve end user goals. Object relationships exist for sending messages.

I am 100% not shitting you when I say scientists named mastodons after their teeth which they thought looked like nipples. “Mastos” as in breast. “odont” as in tooth.
We’re on a website that, in Greek, literally means “Booby Tooth.”
