Mathematician Karl Weierstrass was born #OTD, Halloween, in 1815.

The fools at The Academy all said he was mad, but in 1872 he announced that he had succeeded in creating a ~monster~.

They re-sent the “LOGIN” message an hour later, establishing a connection between UCLA and Stanford.

So technically the first three characters transmitted over what would become the internet were “LOL.”

Hi @mattasdata and all others. There is a SocRSE (UK) Mastodon account coming in the next few days. I will make an announcement on Slack and let people know when it will be available.

@code4thought

Last year we released a statement in which we said we will continue “to monitor changes at Twitter in conjunction with internal discussions about whether our presence on the platform will continue.”

We now announce that as of today, 20 October 2023, all our #socialmedia engagements will be from this Mastodon account, as well as LinkedIn and YouTube, and none from our 5 #Twitter / X accounts.

Find out about these changes and more here: carpentries.org/blog/2023/10/a

I wrote about my first two months on Mastodon. I was a Mastodon hater because I thought it would be weird, complicated, or dead. It's been none of those things.

I'm ashamed I didn't join earlier and I'm ashamed I haven't been telling people to join it, because it's a version of the internet and social media I've long advocated for with my reporting: decentralized, portable, user controlled, not corporate:

I have no issues whatsoever with people wanting to be on Bluesky; in fact, if it hastens the demise of Twitter/X which now seems beyond repair, I’m personally all for it- as far as politics, cat pictures, thoughts on the world in general etc are concerned

but I don’t understand how moving *science discourse* to a for profit, invite only, platform is in any way compatible with the goals of open science and science reform.

am I missing something?
