@nova also, it is very difficult to interfere for state actors. It is very easy for a government to block twitter, but it is very difficult to block ALL mastodon instances. That combined with different laws and regulations depending on location, and combined with better user exerience because everyone can choose a instance depending on their priorities, a better and much more open network is the result. Thats why I started my own instance. To fill in a niche, and to protect the network

So many people are having a bad first experience with Mastodon because they're using the official app which is lacking features, doesn't allow image uploads randomly, has random slowness, and doesn't give you easy access to the two most active feeds where you can find people (Local and Federated).
Please switch to Metatext, Tusky, or Tooot for a better mobile experience (or even use a browser).
Out of the >15k users that joined this week, over 11k are on the official apps.
Tip for newbies: filling in the text description for pics posted is, I have learned, really appreciated. There’s a sizeable community of the visually impaired over here and doing it means they’re not excluded. Also, it’s fun to do. If you’re on your phone, tap on the pic and start typing. (I didn’t realise I could go that) On the desktop app you’re given a prompt. It’s super easy.
A social network is only as good as its network effect.
Twitter's network effect is being purposely diminished.
So who is this service for?
Now that Big Social is marching towards its inevitable death, do I miss it?
No!
Big Social made its choice. It chased short term profit above sustainability and survivability.
It’s interesting that the biggest communication challenge facing Mastodon communities is explaining that it’s basically a protocol and a network of independent, interconnected servers, which is what the Web, e-mail, even DNS and most of the fundamental services we use on the internet are, and always were.
It just illustrates just how much ‘Big Tech’ proprietary social media platforms swallowed up and walled off, if it’s now difficult to explain what the internet actually is!
I am seeing a bunch of new people posting #uspol stuff with content warnings properly deployed.
Thank you. This is appreciated.
Don’t judge but I’m scrolling TikTok because I’m so damn anxious. It’s a litany of embarrassing things I don’t really want you to know about that may get me through the day. Obviously, lots of puppy videos. Also our four dogs are so spoiled they’re looking outside at the rain like “oh thank God we don’t have to go out there like normal dogs”
@apmassaro3 yes indeed, you can Migrate your account fully to a different instance. Here is the Instructions, it's pretty easy :) I invite you to Mas.to we have a pretty stable instance with an Admin that is quickly in response to every issue of his users. #StandWithUkraine on Mas.to! 🇺🇦😊 https://www.google.com/amp/s/blog.joinmastodon.org/amp/2019/06/how-to-migrate-from-one-server-to-another/
