So, dear #tangara lovers and MP3 enhtusiasts, it finally is ready!
*Build your own Tangara*
Do you prefer to assemble devices yourself rather than buy them ready-made? Attending the #38C3 ? A group of electronics hackers from https://ZTL.space and coredump.ch are offering a DIY Tangara workshop at the Hardware Hacking Area, on day 1 only.
You can register here: https://events.ztl.space/9cklb/
All the information is in the pretix, please read carefully :)

Whether you're on Bluesky, or Threads, or Instagram or X or anything else, you are a guest. You are using servers that someone else pays for. Infrastructure that has to be supported by vast sums of money to support this level of traffic, and it only gets more expensive as traffic scales up.
You don't have much ground to stand on, individually, telling the platforms what to do.
But here?
Here we own the network. We control the network. And if you don't like how the network is collectively being run, the option to start your own social media, with your own data, and your own federation decisions, is always there to you. You can keep all TERFs off of your own social media platform, we have lists of all their server hangouts already, just import one. Your server admin probably already did.
So even though the same people are found across any social network, once the community is in control of who gets blocked, the shape of that network changes quite a lot.
cw: racism, coopting of genetics for racist goals
"the forces of racism have regrouped on the borders of legitimate science and transformed themselves into a dynamic and creative citizen science movement capable of exploiting features of human genetics"
@azonenberg Where can I buy those Hello Kitty lab overalls that are, no doubt, static dissipative and splash-proof against various chemicals?
@yassie_j I would fail memory self-test every. single. day.
I went to #Switzerland, the world's greatest railway nation, and got to ride some of its lesser-known trains.
I started with the Belle Époque train from #Montreux to Zweisimmen.
Its “Orient Express”-inspired carriages are run 4x a day—same price as 1st or 2nd class tickets on a regular train.

US strangling science funding and about to lose too many to count years long investments in science, NZ defunding social sci, Canada holding sessions RIGHT NOW about EDI in science where people testify with erroneous readings of research meant to *show evidence of disparities and inequity* arguing that based on identity some scholars are less worthy than other scholars, can't even list all the ish happening in the UK, it's all happening pretty fast good luck everybody
@foone What about hard drives that run at 60 rpm in north america and 50 rpm in eurasia?
Great weekend of training wrapped up, and another new class of volunteers is qualified to respond to missing persons in county (full state-wide certification doesn't happen until they've completed the other half of the training program early next year).
Welcome aboard! Looking forward to serving alongside all of them.

@MLE_online @smellsofbikes there are 915 MHz *omnidirectional* antennas that can offer quite some gain: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005132142342.html
The taller they are, the more gain they provide ... and the more expensive they get (mostly due to shipping long rigid stuff I believe).
They are not great if the geography is very hilly, you install it on a skyscraper, or you try to reach planes/satellites, but they will improve range if your problem is mostly 2D.
Cumbersome for mobile setups (antenna must be perfectly vertical), but interesting when putting an autonomous relay on a roof, where you'll need to budget some solar panel, battery, waterproof enclosure and mounting hardware anyways.
Work agreed to explore meshtastic as a possible option for emergency communications and sent me a pair of these little gadgets to try out.
Now i just have to figure out how they work

Please google Great Barrington Declaration. If it had been implemented, millions more people would have died at the start of the pandemic. Now, one of its architects will lead the National Institutes of Health (if confirmed), the largest funder of biomedical research in the world.
