Tip to anyone who put their creations in the world:
When someone sends you a happy note about something you've done, posts a particularly nice review, or otherwise gives you a warm fuzzy, be sure to clip it (screen shot, whatev) and save it to a special place that you can look through when you're feeling down or blocked.
How about no?:
“ “We believe that our direct capture technology is going to be the technology that helps to preserve our industry over time,” Hollub told the audience. “This gives our industry a license to continue to operate for the 60, 70, 80 years that I think it’s going to be very much needed.”
It’s important to challenge statements like these whenever they appear. Carbon capture’s purpose is to remove legacy emissions, not to facilitate new emissions!

"If one were to put last year's German CO2 emissions into a container as a pure gas, one wld need a sphere with a diameter of almost 9 km. The huge object wld nearly reach the altitude of airliners. If the CO2 weren't to escape into the atmosphere but collect on the ground, all of 🇩🇪 would be covered by a layer 1 m high - just from the emissions of 2022."
Excellent piece by @christianschwaegerl debunking once more the false claim that 🇩🇪 emissions don't matter much.

the market for network-controllable power strips is weird
it's two things:
1. 50$ devices intended for use in the home. 3 plugs, connects to some cloud service, shiny and available on amazon
2. 300$ devices with 8 ports and you can talk to it over RS232 and 10/100 ethernet and the web stack fits on a 64kb eeprom and it's only purchasable on a website that was last updated in 2008
If this city really cared about pedestrian safety, this would have been done the day after the killing. We don’t need studies to do what we know saves lives. We don't need platitudes from city officials (no matter how heartfelt). We need concrete action and we need it now
A week ago, a driver turning right at 4th/King killed for a four year old. Today at the vigil organized by WalkSF and other non-profits, SFMTA said it would take 3 weeks to do a “quick build” to make the intersection safer. That's too long to wait. So we did our own quick build tonight and closed one of the turn lanes
I am *SO* sick of joining #Discord Servers for everything and anything.
I do NOT want to join your server of 400+ people I *do not know* and have no desire to talk to because you wouldn't link me your GitHub or site directly or put necessary information in your README for a thing I just want to download and use.
Please, for the love of Celestia STOP doing this. IF your server gets deleted, that information is GONE. If Discord shuts down, that information is GONE. If someone doesn't want to join a 400+ person chat room, they're SCREWED. PLEASE STOP.
You people know that there are limits to the number of servers people can JOIN right?!
Sweet Luna's Moon! Seriously, just make an RSS Feed..! Put up an info page on GitHub Pages, it's FREE.
I miss forums you could browse without an account
Please... please... #StopDiscordCentralization

A decade ago, the #OLPC had a screen that could work in 2 modes: normal LCD with colour, and low-power sun-readable monochrome. The techno was by #PixelQi. That company tanked but apparently https://www.tripuso.com/index.html is still selling 7 inches screens with the techno. Anyone bought some from them? Do you know of any other tech that is similar (fast color & e-ink-like monochrome)?
"In a surprising revelation, the Brandt Company cattle ranch in California's Imperial Valley stands as the state's largest single point source of methane emissions, surpassing any oil, gas, or landfill site. This 643-acre feedlot, home to 139,000 beef cattle, emits methane equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of 165,000 cars.
Yet, a “kid gloves” approach to agricultural emissions raises significant questions about an environmentally conscious state's commitment to combating climate change. As we delve deeper into the story, the growing impact of animal agriculture on our climate becomes increasingly evident. "

Nice read. Buried lede: Mastodon is the overwhelming choice for an alternative. Now we need to improve the reach.

I'd like to be snarky about this, but it's sad to watch #Twitter's slow death. That stupid, beautiful site has been vital to me in my development as a poet. And as someone who can probably be described as Very Online, I used to find the site good in a bunch of other ways as well. But at some point, you have to go. He's deleting old tweets to save a bit of money on storage space. And meanwhile, all the tweets on the Arab Spring, the Mumbai attacks, etc, are gone. They're just...gone.
To those hopeful that #BlueSky is the answer, Jack Dorsey in full agreement with Musk's plan to remove blocking is crucial to know.
Jumping from one billionaire's playground to another won't fix any problems – especially when the two billionaires are good chums.
I like this piece by @andrewdessler on the inequality that people face in dealing with #climateImpacts.
I'm afraid I too often say things like "we can adapt" without adding the obvious caveat "but there's going to be suffering which will overwhelmingly affect already disadvantaged groups"
The Danish #ClimateAtlas isxat least an attempt to make sure everyone has the same high quality information freely available. But that doesn't mean the same capacity to act on it
Over the past two weeks @manawyrm and I have been hacking on InfiRay C200 thermal imaging cameras:
https://chaos.social/@manawyrm/110450370124789150
To our delight they have turned out to be super hackable!
One sore spot for us was that the minimum focus distance of the camera is rather large. So I designed a small magnetic lens attachment that gets it down from ~20cm to less than 5cm:
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6051118
The difference in focus at 5cm distance is quite striking (first image without lens, second with)
