Yesterday, "Modern Sweden" turned 500 years. 6 June 1523 was the official end to the Kalmar Union with Denmark.

Amazing that it went by practically without any attention at all amazes me. Are the people too scared to offend migrants? Some other reason?

@modrobert

I was gone from Sweden for ~30 years, and one thing that I noticed coming back was how "meek" Swedish people are. Always agreeable, unable to handle confrontation and never standing up for anything.

Of course, not talking about individuals, but as a general trend and I feel sorry for those who think that "getting along" is always the best approach.

Most Jews in Germany thought the same.

@niclas Not sure if people in general are "meek" in Sweden, but definitely the politicians ruling the country. BTW: I've been away since 2001, still not back, but visited a few years back.

@modrobert
Maybe "meek" is the wrong word. But every bloody problem, people I meet say "Staten borde..." rather than looking for a grown up decision to do something oneself.

@niclas I don't like when a government treat their citizens as children, this is often the case in Sweden. Maybe what you describe is the effect of that going on for too long?

@modrobert And the population wants their nanny to treat them that way... or so it seems.
