A few weeks ago, I saw perfect ripples forming in the clear warm waters of the Red Sea. Last week I saw their geological equivalent at the @LapworthMuseum.

I touched the rock just to feel the warmth of the sun again, to feel the water lapping against my skin.

Happy #FossilFriday 😊

renewables win!

Good news!
AGL to close South Australia’s main gas power station, citing new grid link & cheaper renewables: closure of the Torrens B 600MW gas-fired plant will happen by mid-2026, instead of 2035 as previously planned

Nicholas Gonzalez (@NicoSGonzalez on the bird app, Audubon communicator) tweeted his wish for an Apple/Google Map eBird add-on— plug in a destination but get alerts of the rare/cool birds you could stop and see along the way

“How cool would that be??” I thought

In swoops Jer Thorp, a professor who writes programs and likes birding (@blprnt there)— turns out there is a little program that does that already!! Find it here: birdtrip.glitch.me/

Add addresses and see the birds between them!!

@futurebird i would have missed it too if I hadn’t read your post first.

Wielding a massive goth shield crafted from its own feces, this young tortoise beetle is truly an animal for our times.

@conradhackett I’m Australian and only recently joined mastodon. Noticing a distinct lack of conservative content which I consider to be a major medium/long term issue. Excluding extremists on either side I don’t see how democracy can function without diversity and dialogue. We’re all deserving of having our hopes and dreams heard.

I could stare at this Brahmin moth for hours. Specimen in the UT insect collection.

@adamsteer interesting potential in teaching how to move efficiently, safely and quietly with minimal disturbance. Combine that with stalking skills like managing scent, tracking, learning to predict daily pattens of the local wildlife. Mental health benefits alone would be incredible. Have you looked at forest bathing certification for ideas?

@laurakm @ffeth similar experience for me, am really enjoying the less dopamine driven experience.

Climate denialism ending at CSIRO #auspol

@johnquiggin an incredible relief.

My most well known photo from the field, and well timed being very nearly the anniversary of the 2016 Kaikoura Earthquake sequence. This is the "Wall of Waiau" on the Leader fault. This scarp is actually a bit of a quirk of nature, no prior rupture here and effective localised normal movement due to topography on an oblique thrust and right lateral fault.

Who can see your toots? Whose toots can you see? Found this clarifying graphic at axbom.com/mastodon-tips/

The best way to increase everyone's feed diversity is to go follow interesting accounts on other instances :)

If you download your Twitter archive it arrives wrapped as a static HTML page, which is not very useful for doing anything with, and worse: it requires the original account to be still active to do useful things like enlarge the images since they use t.co links.

So here's a Python script to convert a Twitter archive to markdown or other formats: github.com/timhutton/twitter-a

Now you can archive your tweets in any way you want.
