As an undergrad and PhD student I was always so astounded by how professors seemed to know off the top of their head so many different papers and authors --- how were they able to memorize all that? And how could I ever catch up??

But then I realized they just knew all these people and lived through the conference talks and publications, and so it's more like a list of friends and memories and not an encyclopedia.

@Neurograce As a PhD student, hearing this makes me feel so much better!
