Something big is happening in Mastodon over the weekend. Here is my graph, updated. Right now Mastodon is growing ~3 times faster than Twitter.

Who out there can give good tips as to how to best utilize the features of this universe? It’s strange and unwieldy to me. Thanks to those of you who’ve migrated here to follow me. As I said on Twitter, I’m not ceding that ground (yet) but I wanted to try cultivating a new spot here as well.

You cannot run an arbitrary search on Mastodon — in plain English: you cannot search for a specific expression in toots

Why? It's because allowing it would open the gate of harassment. It's not a bug, it's a conscious design decision.

How to find content then? Use hashtags instead! Including in your own toots — to make them easily discoverable. You can also browse the local and federated timelines.

So places encourage posts only about their niche. Some people like to compartmentalise their posts in this way.

Most folk, I believe, choose a community of like-minded people with similar interests but post anything they feel.

Some folk have several accounts they use for their different interests. That always felt like too much work for me.

Mastodon shows why open source is so important.

It IS the alternative to big corp. It CAN change the adverse and make our interactions healthy(er) again.

The trouble with the “Eff about and find out” that’s unfolding at The Other Place, is that everyone is being dragged through the “find out” stage. I hope he risks a fart at an important press event and loses.
