I really enjoyed listening in on this chat with @Cmastication

One big takeaway – if you can possibly do it, express your results in dollars. It’s a #dataScience cheat code.

i’ve moved over from another server! but re #introduction here

i’m a stats-oriented #DataScientist working at a pediatric hospital in the clinical analytics department (ie non-research)

i love using #RStats and #SQL and #WhatsYourActualQuestion to solve clinical care problems, especially in #CriticalCare and #Neurology, and strong interest in #DataEthics and #EquityAnalytics

i use #Frequentist, #Bayesian, and #Information-Theoretic methods, as there is no single definition of probability!

Some people think Mastodon is too weird to become popular:

I joined Twitter in 2008. We had to put a "d" in front of a tweet to convert it to a direct message and every other day you had some embarrassing private moments exposed because someone forgot about the “d”. Hashtags were just a community hack, introduced by Chris Messina to somehow tag content. Search? Hah, you wish! Tweets via SMS were supposed to be a thing. Oh, and the daily meet and greet with the failwhale. Totally not weird.

Oh well...at least it's an excuse to re-post one of my grumbles about this statistical race to the bottom where we let so many people who don't know what they are talking about dictate so much about medical research. statsepi.substack.com/p/how-ba

I once made a #shiny app (based on a script by @f_g_zampieri), demonstrating the relationship between prevalence/pre-test probability, sensitivity, specificity and post-test probabilities. Useful in teaching #bayesian thinking in diagnostic medicine, free to use! Appreciate feedback if improvements can be made lmsaxhaug.shinyapps.io/Leaf_Ap #MedEd

90% of data science is data cleaning.

90% of data cleaning is data understanding.

90% of data understanding is figuring out the denominator.

When it came time to reckon with social media’s failings, nobody ran to the “web3” platforms. Nobody asked “can I get paid per message”? Nobody asked about the blockchain. The community of people who’ve been quietly doing this work for years (decades!) ended up being the ones who welcomed everyone over, as always.

Hey #Rstats folks! Just started on an R package to interact with the mastodon API. Not much there yet except a cool sticker. All contributions welcome 🙂github.com/schochastics/rtoot

(There is already a package available here: github.com/ThomasChln/mastodon but it seems abandoned.)

Read about the young (29) founder of Mastodon, why he created it, and the surprisingly effective way it isolates hate groups.

Who’d have guessed Elon Musk would pay $44 billion to promote Mastodon.

I see a lot of people talking about how Mastodon "Feels like the Internet I remember from 20 years ago."

That's no accident. That's Federation. That's UseNet, IRC, Email, Message Boards, etc. What do they all have in common?

Federation: Users congregating around watering holes of common interest, but still being a part of a larger whole.

THIS IS HOW THE INTERNET WAS DESIGNED TO BE. And I am HERE for it.

Mastodon and Twitter can coexist. Mastodon is for smart content, Twitter is for watching Elon Musk own himself.

Nurses set to hold biggest-ever strike - this has been brewing for years. Action will be trust by trust as the ballot was local rather than national. Big test for government:

Unlike other social networks, Mastodon is not designed to grab and keep your attention by always showing you what it thinks interests you the most. This also means it does not use likes to determine which posts it should feature in people's timelines and thus likes are not as important.

If you think a post should have a larger audience, you have to boost it, not just like it.

Sigh.

EMIS looks to be leaving Scotland. Vision will be the sole GPIT supplier in the country. r1.dotdigital-pages.com/p/49LX

There was a lesson from Wales abortive tender process digitalhealth.net/2018/01/emis that Scotland _could_ have learned something from. Having a single vendor is bad... 👀 The single EPMA vendor in Scotland...

This is bad for both sides.

New user here. Had been considering the change for a while, took the plunge with the rest of the refugees of the . Lurked for a few days before posting.

I mostly used the birdsite for learning, was something I think worked rather well.

That said... By comparing with my (admittedly small, but fresh) home feed here at , during these past few days I have come to realize just how much the birdsite's algorithms were keeping me within rather limited boundaries, even if my tastes and interests have always been the same. has been giving me less noise and more content.

I am hopeful that this new experience might expand my cultural horizons through all of your wonderful collective and collaborative input and feedback!

Thank you to the creators and team behind and to the maintainers of this server @freemo !
