"" is inherently unreliable. It might behave unpredictably at any point.

Unpredictable behavior is not a characteristic one wants in an agent.

Confidentiality is only one element of privacy.

Tuta is worse than Proton because if you try to be private, they will quietly disable your account and tell you that you failed to login (as if you got your password wrong).

Show thread

While I'm sure Proton is secure, I don't think sending a SMS to activate an account is good for privacy?

Remember that people were using OnlyFans and Pornhub as places to upload historic content to, presumably because other sites were too censorious.

I remember YouTube used to mess with people for... Cursing in a video. I saw a post earlier today complaining about how YouTube apparently doesn't like nudity.

There are plenty of things which frustrate people about YouTube, such as arbitrary censorship and downranking. Or that YouTube keeps trying to get you to login. It might be better to talk about those than berating people for linking to the site.

Show thread

Alright, perhaps ideally, you might not want people to use YouTube, you might want them to use something like Peertube instead, however, it's undeniable that YouTube is a part of everyday life. I don't think berating people for that is helpful.

"You shouldn't post YouTube links on Mastodon because it's owned by Google!"
Talking like this looks out of touch.

"Under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, which was introduced in the National Assembly Wednesday, authorities would create an agency with the power to order the immediate blocking of content deemed “unlawful and offensive” from social media, such as content critical of judges, the armed forces, parliament or provincial assemblies. Individuals and organizations posting such content may also be blocked from social media."

"The law also makes spreading disinformation a criminal offense, punishable by three years in prison and a fine of 2 million rupees ($7,150).
Unions representing journalists and news editors rejected the bill Thursday."

There was a bit of "does this look old enough" (and looking at little details) to roleplay with with a character from an game on Mastodon.

Looks like expression is being chilled.

There is quite a bit of discourse where the fediverse is represented as some kind of silver bullet. And while it represents a good alternative to platforms like Bluesky and Twitter, there are issues like this which remain a turn-off to real adoption.

fieldnotes.resistant.tech/fede The tendency of the fediverse towards inter-instance censorship has been documented as early as 2018 in Sarah Jamie Lewis' scathing piece titled "Federation is the Worst of all Worlds".

Show thread

While the fediverse is put forward by some as a solution to social media, the fediverse itself has a serious problem with inter-instance censorship which is very arbitrary and capricious.
