The term unmoderated is overrated.

Practically everyone moderates. Chans moderate, even if they have a lighter approach to it. This might be to remove spam or an undesired form of content. Perhaps, it's a form of content unrelated to the purpose of a site. It might be due to legal concerns or some other reason. Even a drug marketplace was reported to moderate, such as in removing photography of child abuse.

Not taking down a bit of content immediately doesn't make a site "unmoderated".

🔍👀IN SEARCH OF BLOSSOMS🗺️🌸

Plum blossoms (梅 'ume'/aka the 'Japanese apricot') herald springtime in Japan, arriving a few weeks before the first cherry blossoms🙌

With a spattering of snow on the ground it feels too cold for blossoms, but on the trees you will see the buds ready to bloom.

There are people saying that Twitter is censoring links to Signal.

A few suggestions to try out Bluesky.

It's interesting how in a few fantasy novels, the world is actually about as big as the Sun.

Thoughts on COSL. The website (they point out it's a WIP) talks of projects being independent, but then, there's language implying they're not so independent. One's a project which probably should be independent, even if they offer consulting services (as they have suggested they do) to them.

Looking at COSL's annual report. There seems to be a bunch of therapists (and a lawyer). I would have thought there'd be more tech expertise (not replacing an existing person but in addition).

reason.com/2024/04/18/u-s-sent An old one but judges can no longer boost someone's sentence on conduct a jury acquitted them of. A boon for due process.

"The Supreme Court on Friday ruled that the right to a trial by jury and to due process apply to people who face a steep sentencing enhancement under federal law, in a ruling that transfers some power from the hands of judges to the public and will affect many criminal defendants' future punishments."

""Prominent among the reasons colonists cited in the Declaration of Independence for their break with Great Britain was the fact Parliament and the Crown had 'depriv[ed] [them] in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury,'" he writes. "The Fifth and Sixth Amendments placed the jury at the heart of our criminal justice system" in order "to mitigate the risk of prosecutorial overreach and misconduct" and serve as a check on the government."

"Federal judges will be limited from enhancing defendants' sentences based on conduct a jury acquitted them of, a practice that has drawn condemnation from a wide range of civil liberties groups, lawmakers, and jurists."

I see someone asking why a European instance prohibits communism. It might have something to do with countries like Germany having banned the Communist Party (this was many decades ago).

Does anyone here use Threads? How is it? Is it active? Not talking about opinions from pundits and such.

I'm also not a fan of the term Trust & Safety. I prefer the terms content moderation and content policy.

I've historically not been a fan of Bluesky's moderation practices myself (I've heard that they are puritanical in some ways). However, we should be wary of making these kinds of insinuations.

This should go without saying but suggesting that Bluesky's Trust & Safety Head is somehow a child predator because he won't moderate a specific user who apparently holds hateful views is not okay.

🎎🍵CAMELLIA TEA CEREMONY🌺🍡

The calm, cold, quiet days of winter are almost over, and the fragrant plum blossoms herald warmer days ahead.

Before the trickle of visitors becomes a flood, let me take the time to show you around our teahouses, and explain what services we offer🙇‍♂️

However, if someone takes issue with cases like that, it's strange to call for less review.

Without someone manually reviewing it, it also means automatically accusing someone of being a criminal to the police.
