@freemo thinking specifically about systematic or common problems in biology research, particularly small sample size ecology. i'm working on stuff to do with p-hacking, misunderstandings of statistical significance, and underrepresentations of error at the moment
@Katie its not a threat its a warning, be very careful
@GreenandBlack@sunbeam.city @Noelle808 it's actually 3.5 categories: 'cop' is a sub-category of 'fascist'

The final vote on the EU #CopyrightDirective is happening THIS WEEK!
Dozens of MEPs are undecided on how to vote on the EU's disastrous #CopyrightDirective. Here's how to call them now, and how to tell them to delete #Article11 and #Article13! https://saveyourinternet.eu

@paulfree14 Look up the Sneakernet, maybe? AFAIK it's the general term for that sort of physical information sharing.

@nachdemsturm i want to show it to all of the Fools i work with-- but, of course, they'd shut down as soon as it looked like she disagreed with them. sigh. people.
I'm at the point in this research project where I get to print out papers and reviews and put them all in a huge pink sparkly binder and write the relevant citations on the file dividers (which correspond to the sub-headings of the project) and, because this is the only organised thing in my house and indeed my entire life, it brings me an immeasurable amount of joy.
For the 1st time in history(!) #mathematics' most prestigious prize has been awarded to a woman, Karen Uhlenbeck. She is recognized for revolutionary advances in the intersection of math and physics https://edition.cnn.com/2019/03/19/world/karen-uhlenbeck-abel-prize-mathematics-trnd/index.html

@nachdemsturm ContraPoints does a lot like that-- very engaging videos that are wholly accessible but clearly painstakingly researched. Also, she looks incredible the entire time.
There's a pervasive liberal myth that the powerful care, or even want to know, what we think. It's the same thought process behind sidewalk protests, because the thing that *really* causes change is witty slogans on posterboard
These things have *never* worked, yet people still believe that all we need is a few more signatures and a few more protestors and then they'll crack. Why should they?
The only language the ruling class speaks is force. If you don't make it more damaging for them to keep up than to relent to you, they won't give a fuck
@Luna it's for an EPQ- extended project qualification- with the idea that when it's done I might serialise it and either shop it about for publication a little or put it up online, and hopefully continue it into developement of mathematics up to Euclid (possibly beyond!) (I have big dreams.)
@Luna the project's title so far is 'a prehistory of counting,' which is about as vague as its scope, which is something I gotta work on! so far, it's looking like it's going to be about how the brain physically processes arithmetic and numbers, and how that capability evolved (with attention to mathematics skills in non-human animals, and how the do that, and whether or not they're actually doing that.) and then evidence for numeric systems pre-the invention of zero, and a little section on the end where I take a dive into science fiction and ask how aliens might count.
Accessibility in legalese sounds . . . simultaneously very hard to achieve and very important?
