It's not like p2p social networks don't exist, it's just that federation of servers resulted as more convenient in the long term.
p2p comes with a lot of issues including privacy, security, discovery...
It's not like it's impossible to turn our personal devices as nodes of a distributed network, but it would be better for now to just make easier to setup a personal ActivityPub server on a domain you own instead of registering to someone else instance.
And even that comes with issues that people are already having now with their small/personal instances.
P.S. nice animation but even thought that is a historical representation the terminology sounds wrong to me: there are centralized and decentralized networks. The decentralized ones can be federated or distributed.
