Something like this: if you don't follow people on large servers a big part of the network appears "shadowbanned" to you i.e. lower counters for favorites and boosts, no toots in federated timeline etc.

I just know that "follow bots" were introduced to mitigate this and now there are ActivityPub relays. I don't know the details.
