@emilygorcenski Five litres are (approximately) a nice round gallon; and a gallon of paint is only considered convenient because it's what you're used to. A litre (of water) weighs a kilogram. A thousand litres of water weighs a ton, and is one cubic metre. Without looking it up, what does a gallon of water weigh, and what is the volume of a ton of water?
