@lightweight @mike Looks like I'm way behind I don't recall 'Kin' The 'Zune' however I was a fan of for some reason I liked it more at the time.

That might be the first time I've seen a Marketing accusation in a sentence that sounded almost as a complement lol.

@ramob @mike I always have to belly chuckle everytime I see "Zune" - I love that their flagship audio device (their self-proclaimed "iPod Killer") couldn't play MSFT's trademarked "Plays4Sure" audio format. Failure doesn't get much more comprehensive.

@lightweight @mike

I'm going to have to be honest here. I hadn't heard of that codec/format until...well right now. Was it a defunct venture at that point already? Or were they still funneling money into it and the left hand wasn't talking to the right?

@lightweight @mike
From the wiki 'DRM servers related to PlaysForSure were turned off August 31, 2008, meaning that any operating system upgrade or migration rendered all content unplayable' Ouch, I would have been pretty mad if I lost some off my music like that. As soon as I read 'certified for Vista' the timeline made more sense.

@ramob @mike heh, yeah, seems to me that all the folks who owned PlaysForSure music were hostages to the Microsoft corporation... until they decided they were, like, totally expendable. After all, they'd already paid their money.

This is why some of us hate MSFT and don't do DRM. More people should join us. Because this sort of shit happens every day.

@lightweight @mike
Makes sense, unfortunately I haven't invested in music in quite a while with all the streaming options available. I've just paid subscriptions. Sure one or two CD's I'll pick up...but come to think of it I have not purchased music beyond the subscription in perhaps a year or more. I'm curious to check out 'bandcamp' and some of the newer(?) non DRM sites but I haven't yet.

@ramob @mike the only place I buy music these days is Bandcamp (and always FLACs). :) Thankfully, I've been able to get both of Andrew Bird's last two cracking albums (which have recently been made available there) instead of wearing out the recordings I made off of youtube... (see youtube.com/watch?v=QGAzPtwUJJ - normally would post via invidio.us, but apparently, it's down for the count :( )

@lightweight @mike What are (FLACs)? I heard invidio.us was closing down something about needing developers?
Sad to not hear about it until it's shuddering.

@ramob FLAC is an open standards, DRMless, lossless compressed music format. Superb.

And yeah, only hearing about invidio.us today - still don't know any details.

@ramob @mike I got the trademark wrong - was "PlaysForSure"... (not 4).

@ramob @mike it was a fairly big deal for MSFT right up until it wasn't. Sorta like Silverlight. Wouldn't want to spook the partners, eh. :)

@ramob @mike (sorry, don't have any respect for MSFT, in case that wasn't already apparent).
