The choice in a social network to a lot of people is like the choice of owning a smartphone or not owning one, and that choice means participating in society or not, like I still keep a facebook around with a few family members because they themselves wont move over because they have people that wont move and so on.
The issue with adoption of alternative software or networks is systemic and it's in part because people are too illiterate with technology, at the end of the day people will just accept convenience over most things, and proprietary services can provide that better because they have more resources on this, they won't care at the censorship of certain things either, because it's more inconvenient to look into alternatives than to just go with it.
Like I still have facebook/whatsapp because some people don't use anything else.
