Starting Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash. I'm about 30 pages in and I'm having trouble. The protagonist's ego is exhausting. The lengths the author goes to talk about computer things to create some kind of significance feels weird.

Also, he made up a standards body for a virtual world (interestingly called the Metaverse) when he could have easily just used the IETF. Granted, this last point is just me being insufferable. #book #scifi

@redeagle counter point: the main character's name is Hiro Protagonist which is about the biggest mic drop in the history of character names.

More seriously, it's going to show it's age but there are some interesting ideas underneath around language and some other characters that step into the point of view character role throughout the story that may (or may not) be more bearable later on.
