My father had some weirdness about him and told us kids if we would eat pickled pigs feet he would give each of us $.50. That was big money for a kid in the fifties. First and only time.
@JAWG What was it like?
@JAWG @RickiTarr Pickled pig's feet in Bavaria (Surhaxe) is really good. A whole pig's foot pickled until it becomes kind of like ham. Served with Sauerkraut. very tasty.
@JAWG @RickiTarr Pied de porc in France I find a bit fatty. I prefer Schweinshaxe or Surhaxe in Germany. I prefer the roasted Schweinshaxe with a hard crunchy crust. But, the ham-like Surhaxe is also quite good.
@JAWG @rrb @RickiTarr oh, sauerkraut! where I grew we had fermented cabbage cold and crunchy(sometimes with carrots, or cranberries, or bell pepper, or sour apples). When I first came to Germany and tried actual sauerkraut: cooked, soft and served warm - it seemed the weirdest thing to me. It seems, totally new products often feel rather exotic, but what often feels actually weird is a familiar product with some twist, some shift in taste paradigm
Like when you have sweet (salty) popcorn after you have always had popcorn with salt (sugar).
It is the shock of the familiar made strange.
Cold fermented cabbage? you mean Kim Chi? Kim chi with cranberries or apples? Interesting.
@rrb @JAWG @RickiTarr no, not kim chi, it’s fermented with lactobacterias. Like, German sauerkraut is the same, but they usually cook/heat it a bit after the fermentation, whlist in some other countries it’s kept cold and crispy, no cooking. It’s really sour, but not spicy at all.
Once went with a Doctor Seuss theme and served the grandkids green eggs and ham thinking it would be cute. Not one of us could get past the off color.
@RickiTarr @JAWG @rrb if sauerkraut with apples sounds good, you should try fermented apples! My granny used to make them in a big wooden barrel, whole apples, layered with some straw - one of the smells and tastes I miss most from my childhood
Is this tied to making cider or (German) most? Fermented apple (obst) juice?
@RickiTarr @rrb
The first time my wife saw me eating this concoction she just stopped, looked at me and said nothing.
Ever had Obatzda?
@rrb @RickiTarr
I need to get out more. Either that or sew my mouth shut. I used to be more adventurous, I'm baked in now .
@rrb @RickiTarr
I dig the sauerkraut part. Lately I've taken to sauerkraut, pickled beets and cottage cheese for breakfast. As for the pigs feet it's just one of those things.
