So, the European Union has set up its own Mastodon instance, EU Voice, as an official channel/platform for all its many institutions - what a great initiative https://social.network.europa.eu/about

I do like it here on Mastodon, but the huge influx of people from Twitter means there are far fewer image descriptions than from even a couple of weeks ago. I’d love to tell every one of them about this, but quite frankly there are so many I don’t have the patience. I’d dearly love it if apps could block posts unless an image description was added to every photo, but I suppose that’s too much to hope for. I’m feeling really excluded from so many conversations. It’s getting as bad as Twitter.
Cricut cutting machines, ubiquitous in schools, libraries and makerspaces, can be used to make embossed or stenciled tactile graphics. A Braille embosser costs at least $1500 — Cricuts cost a fifth of that or less. Today I learned that I can handle the hardware and make great stencils: all that holds a Blind maker back is a set of unlabeled controls in the software. Does anyone know somebody at Cricut I could talk to about making the interface more accessible? Boosters beloved on this one!

I am a neuroscientist interested in the circuit dynamics of adaptive but reliable visually guided behavior.
In our group at the U Bonn, we study
- the stabilization of the neural code in visual perception, learning, and memory
- the pathway-specific processing of sensory and self-motion signals
We emphasize ethologically relevant behavior, longitudinal synapse- and circuit-level optophysiology, and miniaturized and bench-top two-photon microscopy.

To bring some color into November:
The foam grasshopper (Dictyophorus spumans) native to South Africa doesn’t spring: Its bright colours warn predators that it is inedible. They feed on poisonous plants and store those toxins in their bodies. In case a particularly hungry animal should try to eat them, they produce a disgustingly smelly foam behind their head. .

If you're like me, then you were really happy to learn about Mastodon's enthusiastic support for image descriptions, and you were really eager to join in.
Then you went to actually write something and realized you have no idea how to present visual information in a way that is helpful/enjoyable to those who are #VisuallyImpaired or #Blind.
I found this guide really informative: https://uxdesign.cc/how-to-write-an-image-description-2f30d3bf5546
Of course, I'd also love to hear any additional tips y'all might have!
#introduction: I am a cognitive neuroscientist at the Ernst Strüngmann Institute in Frankfurt, Germany. I like structure and beauty and somehow that draws me to #oscillations in the brain, mainly recorded with #electrophysiology.
when I have time, I like to make animations of concepts related to that: http://mnemai.org/demos
maybe starting on a new platform will allow for more playfulness again, which I enjoyed at lot in the beginning on twitter. 🙂
Introduction! I am a biologist and neuroscientist. I got a PhD in systems #neuroscience in the Portugues lab imaging the brain of #zebrafish larvae, where described a mesmerising circuit for heading direction in the hindbrain (https://doi.org/10.1101/2022.04.27.489672).
I recently moved to the lab of Giuliano Iurilli at IIT (Rovereto, Italy) to follow up in mice my interest in subcortical circuits for naturalistic behavior.
I'm a fan of #openscience, #Python, and unconventional paradigms. Cortex is overrated!
#Introduction. I'm a theoretical neuroscientist at U Mainz Medical Center and co-affiliated with U Bonn Medical center. Primary focus on cortical circuits, their network activity, synaptic plasticity and protein dynamics in dendrites. Broadly interested how circuits learn e.g. neuro/AI interface and want to understand how neural networks compute, both algorithmically and intracellularly. Occational posts about societal and academic issues.

@pwgtennant Scientific illustrators and others in #sciComm should be able to join as well. We are part of the scientific community.
Listen. dear #SfN2022 people. My incredible amazing wife
@analog_ashley wrote and published an amazing book in the pandemic while teaching biology labs over zoom & shipping homemade science experiment kits to students. She never got to celebrate her book launch
I don't know what you get up to at your fancy neuroscience party but this book NEEDS to be celebrated. Check out her panel on monday at 3pm (https://abstractsonline.com/pp8/#!/10619/session/266) and consider sharing this great book with your students 🙏🧠
