"gendered responses to employees’ expressions of passion—one of the most commonly used criteria used in evaluating potential—both penalize women and advantage men in high-potential selection processes"

We’ve decided to leave X (Twitter). We think that the benefits of being on X are now outweighed by the negatives, and we want to strategically use our resources to promote open scholarship and peer review on other platforms. 🧵 (1/5)
Hey: Can I get #fedihired maybe?
Best fit with my 19 years of experience would be building and managing software teams, or writing code myself. I'm full-stack, but I have more fun with backend + database work.
Preferences:
* Org size <=200 people
* 100% remote work (otherwise, PDX)
* Org is not currently ditching DEI work
* Org is engaged in doing something that will buy the Earth some extra runtime...
* ...or at least trying very hard not to shorten it
Boosts = <3
Anyway one time I was a researcher on a project and responsible for doing any and all of the technical math and data work and I put together a whole careful presentation because I was so excited and proud of my findings and the product person running it said my analyses were "too good" and "scared the rest of the team" and they simply disinvited me from all the upcoming project meetings and said I should email findings to that one person and not to expect a response
2025 Prediction: Meloni's Italy is going to be showing more of its true self, and get cozier with Trumsk's America, away from European initiatives.
"Italian officials have been negotiating on a €1.5 billion deal aimed at supplying Italy with a full range of top-level encryption for telephone and Internet services used by the government”
New year, new blog post: I had a random question, what happens when LLMs are prompted to write better code, again and again? Do they actually write better code? The answer is yes*! https://minimaxir.com/2025/01/write-better-code/
we got a rare thin dusting of snow. I'd rate Odin as mildly bemused but not concerned.

@katharinehayhoe.com Yes, I think it's quite likely at state / local government level. You could have gone out on a bit more of a limb for a black swan kind of event!
Just recovering from a helpful user who launched a web security scanner at my site and found 5 "issues", none of which were a security issue. But by opening public security tickets you cause a lot of work for a project, since we can't just close those & people start to worry if you ignore them. Please think twice before opening security issues if you aren't sure what they mean & you just copied them from a random site. Feel free to send an email before raising the alarm.
This list is scary and depressing—but the 'black swan' event I wrote about breaks the mold.
I’m not being a Pollyanna here. I genuinely believe my prediction has at least as good a chance of being right as any of them, and possibly even more.
What do you think?
The Incredible, World-Altering...
@dogo this brings me back to my ThinkPad X41 tablet days
Aloha fediverse. Unfortunately the great layoffs have come for me and I have been deemed too expensive to keep on, so I need a new job.
I'm a specialist when it comes to legacy systems and technical debt.
If you have a big ball of mud that no one understands and you'd like someone to just Deal With It, I'm your engineer!
I've mostly done this in Python for the past few years but I know a bunch of other languages too.
