Journalists will never stick around this app long term sadly unless it adds quote posting. We desperately need it to communicate effectively, build on each others ideas, and add crucial context to posts. These are things replies simply do not accomplish. Also quote posting or reblogging does not = harassment! Tumblr, for instance, has had the feature since the beginning. We need it here now too 🙏🏻

Reblogging is organic user behavior and Twitter built the quote tweet feature because so many people were doing it manually already. It’s a huge burden on the user not to have this simple and important feature on a social platform imo (again just my personal opinion!)

@taylorlorenz I appreciate your opinion, while contending that you are wrong about this. No, you don't "need" quote tweeting, and lack of it inconveniences no-one, IMHO. It's not a "huge burden", to be sure.

@jab01701mid I specified for journalists because I do believe it is a large burden and hamstrings our ability to contextualize and build on information. Again just my opinion! 😅

@taylorlorenz @jab01701mid So what I’m hearing is that journalists (or some journalists) might not stay on Masto because it doesn’t provide a tool deemed necessary for providing direct, first-layer context, and some folks are willing to lose journalists to keep that tool away because it can be misused and Masto doesn’t need to be a Twitter clone. Could there be journo instances providing QT, and ppl can just not follow journos if they don’t want to see (vetted) news?

Thanks to @Yamainu for a crisp summary.

The content and discussions in sauropods.win/@futurebird/1095, github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i and mew.toot.cat/mw/Quote_toot are interesting and demonstrates the increasing mindshare of netizens towards Mastodon and Fediverse (fediverse.party/).

The initial concerns raised by @taylorlorenz are already addressed by Misskey (misskey-hub.net/en/), Calckey (joinfediverse.wiki/What_is_Cal) and Friendica (friendi.ca/) which are being actively developed as part of the Fediverse. Also, soon Tumblr is expected to add support for ActivityPub, the social protocol powering Mastodon and other apps (techcrunch.com/2022/11/21/tumb).

In my opinion, there is no need to wait and push Mastodon to implement a specific feature. Journalists and other users can immediately switch to one of the instances of the aforementioned micro-blogging platforms and the Fediverse will get further enriched.

Let ActivityPub (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Activity) based Fediverse bloom.
